I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A motorist collided with multiple parked vehicles near Central Fresno on the morning of Thursday, September 7, 2017. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries in this incident.
What Happened?
A woman was driving her SUV along Shields Avenue in the vicinity of Palm Avenue at about 9:00 am. The woman had just finished working a night shift at her job and was on her way home. The woman allegedly fell asleep while driving. This resulted in her vehicle colliding with four parked cars. The impact of the collision caused the woman’s SUV to overturn and cause extensive damage to the parked vehicles.
Authorities from the Fresno Police Department were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. When they arrived, they located the motorist of the SUV. Officials reported that the woman was uninjured in the collision and there were no other parties involved.
What Caused the Accident?
The cause of the accident has not yet been decided due to pending investigation. The processing of a Traffic Collision Report generally takes one to two weeks.
Drowsy Driving Accidents
Drowsy driving accidents occur more frequently than we think. A 2013 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that drowsy driving was responsible for approximately 72,000 collisions, 44,000 injuries and 800 fatalities. An estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that approximately 1 in 25 adult motorists (ages 18 and up) reported falling asleep while operating a motor vehicle in the past 30 days.
Signs of Drowsy Driving
A key detail to note is that drowsy driving is preventable at the start. Every motorist is obligated to operate a motor vehicle free of visual, cognitive and manual impairment. The following symptoms indicate signs of drowsy driving:
- Blinking or yawning frequently
- Forgetting the past few miles traveled
- Missing the destination exit
- Striking a rumble piece along the side of the roadway
- Veering out of your lane
If you find yourself experiencing any of the previously mentioned symptoms while driving, it is best to pull over and take a rest break or change drivers. Following this safety tip may ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
Preventing Drowsy Driving Accidents
It is important to recognize that drowsy driving accidents typically involve traumatic injuries or even fatalities. Drowsiness can impair a motorist’s attention span, reaction time and ability to make good decisions. This side effect can be the result of drunk driving, medications, shift work or even an untreated sleep disorder. For more information, contact an experienced Fresno car accident lawyer.
