Drunk Drivers Targeted in Northern California
Law enforcement in the area has teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to look for drunk drivers on Saturday, August 24 in Sacramento. The event, called “Saturation Saturday” will include those who have been victimized by incidents that involved impaired drivers. Last year, according to statistics supplied by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), around 60,000 people were placed under arrest in 2018 in the state of California. Hopes by MADD are that their teaming up with law enforcement can halve that number.
Seeking Help From an Experienced Lawyer
A seasoned lawyer who has experience in handling injury cases that involve a drunk driver is important to have by your side when seeking compensation. Calling right away when you’ve been involved in an accident is important because the crash site is cleared quickly and evidence can disappear.
Investigating the Accident
Our investigators head to the accident site right away to review the police report for accuracy and interview witnesses. In addition, we perform accident reconstruction to determine how the crash happened and look for tire marks, gouges in the pavement, and other important clues. In many cases, video cameras overhead or at close by businesses catch the accident on tape.
This helps us build a strong case to negotiate with the defendant’s insurance company or build a strong case to take to court if necessary. By collecting the best evidence possible, it enables our clients to obtain fair compensation for their lost wages, medical bills, and other losses.
Efforts to Combat Drunk Drivers
According to Lori Bergenstock, a member of MADD, it is common knowledge that when their organization is in the area, more drunk drivers are caught. Others decide to stay in instead of going out in their vehicles while impaired. Officer John Harris, who is with the CHP, said the numbers of drunk driving arrests last year was astounding, especially since rideshares are available. He said the CHP looks out nightly for those who are drunk driving, but Saturday would be an opportunity to get many officers out on the roadways to look for impaired drivers.
Widespread Participation in “Saturation Saturday”
State Parks will be participating in “Saturation Saturday” also, with plans to have trucks looking for drunk drivers in the afternoon and the marine unit patrolling for them during the daylight hours. In addition to the CHP, the Sacramento Police Department, Stockton Police Department, Citrus Heights Police, and Elk Grove Police are some of the agencies that will participate.
Drunk Driving Convictions
In order to place a claim for damages in a personal injury case, it has to be shown that the offending party owed a duty of care toward the injured person. It also must be shown that the negligent party failed in that duty of care and that financial harm was caused, which was a direct result of the offending party’s actions. In a case involving drunk driving, a conviction is ample proof that negligence contributed to the accident.
