Driving Drunk in Auburn
Auburn is a peaceful community and usually a relatively safe place to drive. According to data from UC Berkeley, Auburn is the site of a significantly lower number of car accidents than other Northern California cities of a similar size. For example, both Davis and Yuba City saw more than four times the number of traumatic car accidents during 2007-2019 compared to Auburn. However, even though Auburn may have calmer roads, drivers are still liable to commit reckless actions and put the lives of others in danger. One particularly dangerous driving behavior that has affected the community of Auburn is getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Those living in Auburn may be interested in these statistics regarding DUI accidents in their city.
Auburn Accidents
During 2007-2019, 534 injury-causing accidents occurred in Auburn. Out of these collisions, 9 caused fatal trauma, while 42 caused severe injury, and 484 caused non-severe injuries. While the large majority of these collisions involved only passenger vehicles, 29 involved a pedestrian, 24 involved a bicycle, and 73 involved a motorcycle. Additionally, around half of these accidents happened on a highway location inside of Auburn. Altogether, car accidents in Auburn caused 9 fatalities and 684 injuries during this period of time.
Out of the total 534 collisions, driving under the influence was reported as the primary causal factor in 71 accidents, accounting for about 13 percent of crashes altogether. This makes driving under the influence the second-most common cause of traumatic collisions in Auburn after speeding, which accounted for almost 40 percent of accidents.
DUI Accident Statistics
Accidents involving DUI in Auburn were typically much more severe than other types of collisions. While the fatality rate for Auburn crashes was about 1.69 percent, accidents that were caused by an intoxicated driver involved a fatal injury 5.63 percent of the time. This means that accidents were nearly three times as likely to cost someone their life if alcohol was involved. Similarly, DUI accidents had a severe injury rate that was almost twice as high as non-DUI collisions.
The most common type of collision caused by DUI in Auburn was hit-object accidents, which accounted for almost one-third of crashes involving an intoxicated driver. Other common DUI crash types included rollovers, sideswipes, and rear-end collisions. Additionally, DUI accidents happened more often between Friday and Sunday. Throughout all days of the week, DUI collisions most often occurred between 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.
DUI and Liability
In the event of an accident involving DUI, the intoxicated driver is considered negligent. This means that drunk drivers can usually be held financially responsible for damages caused the accident. Injured parties can file personal injury claims against intoxicated motorists in order to seek compensation for things such as medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and more. To get more information about receiving financial compensation after a crash, you should talk directly with an Auburn personal injury lawyer.
