Injury Reported in Hornet Drive On-Ramp Accident

Drunk driving is suspected in a Sacramento two-vehicle crash that occurred on June 9. The collision occurred on the Hornet Drive on-ramp to westbound US 50 at around 7:28 in the morning. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the on-ramp was blocked to traffic, however, the vehicles were moved to the right-hand side.

Drunk Driving Suspected as Factor in Two-Vehicle Crash

Sacramento Fire Department emergency responders were called to the crash scene when one of the people involved in the two-vehicle crash complained of pain. A blood tech was contacted to administer a test to see if one of the drivers was intoxicated. The incident is under investigation by the CHP to determine if drunk driving was a factor in the crash.

Drunk Drivers Are a Danger to Others Sharing the Roadway

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, around 30 percent of all traffic accidents involve a drunk driver. Some of the types of accidents commonly caused by drunk drivers, including a two-vehicle crash, include:

  • Rear-end collisions: Because a drunk driver has difficulty judging their distance from other vehicles and their reflexes are slowed, causing a rear-end collision at an intersection is common. In addition, the drunk driver is incapable of reacting quickly if a traffic slowdown or stoppage occurs ahead.
  • Head-on crashes. A head-on collision is one of the most dangerous types of traffic accidents, and drunk drivers are the usual cause. Although these accidents can happen when a driver enters a highway exit ramp, intoxicated drivers can also cause a two-vehicle crash because they weave in the roadway and may fall asleep at the wheel on a two-lane road.
  • Distracted driving accidents: Although most drivers think of texting while driving as the cause of a two-vehicle crash, a drunk driver can cause one easily. Because an intoxicated driver is less likely to be able to multitask, any distraction at all can lead to a serious collision.
  • Drowsy driving: Drunk drivers often get drowsy behind the wheel, and this can cause an accident.
  • Unsafe passing: Intoxicated drivers are especially dangerous when passing. Because they cannot judge their distance from other vehicles, have difficulty tracking with their eyes, and cannot control their speed, attempting to pass another car can end up causing a two-vehicle crash.
