Data on DUI Collisions in Nevada City

Data reported by local agencies, including the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Nevada City Police Department (NCPD), indicates that DUI collisions in Nevada City are a serious problem. According to the statistics, DUI was the second-most common cause of accidents in the city over the last ten years and accounted for just under 20 percent of traumatic collisions and was preceded only by right-of-way violations.

Severity of DUI Collisions

While driving under the influence wasn’t the number one cause of accidents in Nevada City, alcohol-involved crashes were much more likely to cause fatal injuries than collisions that did not. According to reports, there were a total of 129 accidents in Nevada City between the beginnings of 2008 and 2020. Out of these crashes, 30 involved an intoxicated driver, while 99 did not.

While less than a third of Nevada accidents were drunk-driving crashes, every fatal collision involved alcohol. Furthermore, the rate of minor injuries for non-alcohol collisions was about 51 percent, while the rate for DUI accidents was only 13.33. This data shows that collisions involving a drunk driver were much more dangerous than others.

Areas with High Rate of DUI

DUIs in Nevada City tended to happen in a few specific areas. Firstly, the majority of DUI crashes happened on Highway 49. These collisions were mostly located between the Sacramento Street underpass and the Broad Street junction. Additionally, multiple DUI collisions took place on Broad Street near Union Alley.

DUI and Liability

People who choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, they knowingly put the lives of others in danger. Because of this, intoxicated drivers are almost always considered to be reckless drivers and are considered at-fault parties to the crash. This means people who have been hurt during a DUI crash may be able to recover compensation by holding DUI drivers liable through a personal injury claim.

However, the driver may not be the only liable party. In some cases, businesses or individuals that supplied the DUI driver with access to a vehicle or alcohol while knowing they would drive irresponsibly may also be liable. An experienced injury lawyer will know how to determine if any businesses may share responsibility for the crash.

Personal Injury Damages

People who’ve been injured in a car crash face a number of challenges. Firstly, recovering from a major injury is a difficult process and can be stressful as well as intensely painful. On top of this, it’s common for injured parties to require extensive medical care. The cost of surgeries, ambulances, hospital beds, medications, physical therapy, and more can add up quickly.

Accident injuries can also lead to a sudden loss of income or of future earning potential. No longer having a source of income can make it difficult or impossible for injured people to get the care that they need.

Thankfully, all of these losses and more can often be covered by filing a personal injury case. To learn about what damages you may be able to recover, it’s always best to speak personally to an expert attorney in your area.
