Calaveras County Wildfire Caused by DUI Driver
A motorist caused a wildfire in Calaveras County near San Andreas because their vehicle caught fire. We’ve learned the motorist was driving under the influence.
What Happened?
A woman was driving under the influence while heading towards Mountain Ranch Road. The woman was behind the wheel of her 2002 Kia Ria when her right rear rim began to kick up sparks. As a result of the sparks, the woman’s vehicle suddenly caught fire.
Wildfire Started
A wildfire spread to more than 450 acres, which caused threats to multiple homes in the surrounding area. Reports state the wildfire nearly engulfed the same area affected by the Butte Fire of September 2015.
California Highway Patrol Reports
The California Highway Patrol identified the woman who caused the wildfire in Calaveras County as Renee Hogan. Authorities detained Hogan for driving under the influence at the time of the incident. Hogan will be facing other offenses relating to the wildfire.
Cal Fire Public Safety Announcement
Cal Fire Department advised drivers and homeowners to take extra precautions due to this being wildfire season. According to Nancy Longmore, a Cal Fire spokesperson, humans cause 90 percent of wildfires yearly, and most are preventable. The mission of the Cal Fire Department continues to be to assist and prevent fires from happening in the beautiful and majestic state of California. Cal Fire has created an educational program regarding wildfires that can help communities prepare for an unexpected wildfire.
