DUI Hit-and-Run Accident Kills Modesto Man

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto wrongful death lawyer. A Modesto man was helping a family member with their vehicle on the side of the highway in Manteca during the late evening hours of Sunday, June 25, 2017. The man was struck by an oncoming vehicle, which fled the scene after the collision. Sadly, the man passed away due to his injuries.

What Happened?

A 74-year-old Modesto man parked his 2003 Dodge Caravan along the right shoulder of the Lathrop Road offramp on Highway 99. The Modesto man came to assist a member in his family whose vehicle had run out of gas. When the Modesto man was getting out of his vehicle through the driver’s side door, a motorist of a 2009 Ford F-150 allowed his truck to drift onto the shoulder and collide with the man at approximately 11:00 pm. The driver of the Ford fled the scene after the collision.

Was the Modesto Man Injured?

Unfortunately, the Modesto man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The identity of the victim was withheld due to pending notification of next-of-kin.

Authorities Arrest Hit-and-Run Driver

Authorities were able to locate the hit-and-run driver a short time later at his residence along with his vehicle. The man was later detained on suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony hit-and-run. He was later identified as 41-year-old Frank Scotty Richardson from Manteca.

Similar Accident Involving

A similar hit-and-run accident occurred in Modesto on March 13, 2017. A Merced man was driving his 2012 Toyota sedan eastbound on Hatch Road near Carpenter Road at approximately 11:00 pm. A Modesto man was driving his 2016 Dodge sedan northbound on Carpenter Road, approaching the intersection with Hatch Road. Both motorists proceeded through the intersection, which resulted in a serious crash. The front-end of the Dodge collided with the left side of the Toyota. The driver in the Dodge left the scene shortly after the collision. The Toyota driver did not suffer injuries in the accident, however, his passengers did. A 9-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man were transported to a hospital to be treated for major injuries. The other passenger in the vehicle, identified as an 11-year-old boy, sadly passed away at the scene.
