Eat Local – Sacramento Family-Owned Restaurants
Living by the phrase “eat local” is becoming more and more important in our city. Reading the Sacramento Business Journal is depressing. Many Sacramento restaurants are closing for good due to difficulties caused by COVID-19 restrictions. The latest eatery to report that it is permanently shuttered is Tres Hermanas, a Sacramento family-owned Mexican restaurant that has been at its Folsom Boulevard location for 21 years. Fortunately, the family has other restaurants that have so far been able to remain open.
With more stringent restrictions looming, this winter’s economic forecast for local restaurants is dire. In an effort to support small Sacramento businesses, consider eating local in Sacramento by ordering take-out or delivery meals from family-owned restaurants such as those highlighted below.
Adamo’s – 2107 P Street
Open from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (until 9:00 on Fridays and Saturdays).
Offering rich and hearty pasta dishes such as Carbonara and Chicken Alfredo, Adamo’s is the perfect choice for curbside pick-up on a cold Sacramento winter evening. They have recently started offering delivery within two miles of their location, as well. Orders for delivery received by 5:00 p.m. will be delivered between 6-7 p.m.
Chef Polo Adamo was born and raised in Sacramento and is a graduate of American River College’s culinary program. After working at a well-known restaurant in San Francisco, he returned to his hometown to share his love of cooking with our city.
Hana Tsubaki – 5006 J Street
Currently open for curbside take-out only, this Japanese restaurant has occupied its East Sac location since 1978. It is one of the oldest same-family owned restaurants in Sacramento. They serve high quality, house-made traditional Japanese food using fresh fish from around the world. Hana Tsubaki is serving from their dinner menu only at this time. They are open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Bacon & Butter – 5913 Broadway
This local restaurant boasts some of the best breakfast and brunch entrees in town. The food is so popular they opened a second location on J Street in East Sacramento, but that location is dark for the time being due to the pandemic. Try their stellar breakfast burrito or one of their decadent takes on eggs benedict. Check out their Instagram if you need more incentive to call in a contact-free, curbside pick-up order. Open 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Momo’s Meat Market – 5780 Broadway
This small family-owned BBQ joint in Tahoe Park is the place to go to pick up delicious tri-tip, chicken, and ribs. Their side dishes are fantastic as well. Open for pick-up Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Just follow the aroma coming from the smoker in the parking lot.
Madar – 2654 Marconi Avenue
This eatery is billed as Afghani fusion street food. Based on the number of five-star reviews the establishment receives, it is safe to say their offerings are delectable. Currently, hours of operation are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., every day. Try the Sultan Fries which come covered in seasoned grilled chicken, hot sauce, house feta sauce, cilantro, and lime.

Tacqueria Rincon Alteno – 4301 Truxel Road Suite D
Family-owned since 2004, Rincon Alteno is the nickname for a small town in the Mexican state of Jalisco which is formerly known as San Jose de Gracia. The family that owns this restaurant has its origins in that city. Do not miss their crispy tacos, which are some of the best in town. Carryout hours are Monday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:20 p.m.
