Fatal Eureka Pedestrian Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka auto accident lawyer. On Monday, January 23, 2017, an 80-year-old woman and resident of Eureka lost her life as a result of a pedestrian-automobile collision.
The female pedestrian had been walking through a crosswalk at the intersection of Harris and F streets in the neighborhood of Henderson Center just outside of Grundman’s Shoe Services when she was struck by a passing truck.
Collision Details
Police reported in preliminary accounts that a 57-year-old male resident of Eureka had been driving his 1987 Toyota truck eastbound on Harris Street. He had fully stopped his car at the intersection. However, when the traffic light came on signaling an unprotected left turn for the driver, the walk sign also came on for the female pedestrian. She proceeded to walk through the intersection while the driver of the truck proceeded to make a left turn onto F street and collided with her at the northeastern section of the crosswalk.
Police Response
The dispatch center of the Eureka Police Department received a report indicating that a pedestrian had been injured at the intersection and responding officers arrived at the scene of the accident at around 9:55 a.m. Upon arrival, the officers found the female pedestrian in critical condition and had her rushed by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital where she died later in the evening, reported EPD officer of public information, Brittany Powell.
Powell reported that the driver of the truck stayed at the scene of the collision where police met and spoke to him. She indicated that the Eureka Police Department do not believe that the man had been driving under the influence of any intoxicants. After speaking with the man, officers released him. His name has not been released and investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Investigation Efforts
According to Powell, officers are still reviewing footage recorded on surveillance cameras outside the business on the intersection where the crash took place. She also indicated that at least one witness saw the crash happen and has been questioned by investigating officers.
Recent Area Accidents
This crash marks the first pedestrian accident resulting in death that the Eureka Police Department has investigated in 2017. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has launched an investigation into a fatal pedestrian-involved hit-and-run collision that occurred outside of Eureka at the Slough Bridge earlier in the year.
