Major Accident in Natomas Injures 3 People
A major accident occurred in North Natomas on June 13 that sent three people to the hospital, with one listed in critical condition. The accident happened at North Market and Gateway Park boulevards at about 7:00 in the evening. Six vehicles were involved in the collision, and some of the cars sustained significant damage. Police investigating the scene of the accident said they did not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Major Accident: Further Details
Officers with the Sacramento Police Department were on the scene of the major accident as well as the Sacramento Fire Department. Police officers interviewed the occupants of the vehicles as well as witnesses to the crash to try and determine how it happened. It appeared as though multiple vehicles were stopped in front of a red light at the intersection when a car came along and crashed into them, according to a police representative.
Rear End Accidents
Rear end accidents are common, especially at intersections. While many people think that they are not major accidents but just fender-benders, this isn’t always true. The seriousness of injuries can depend on the speed of the vehicle that strikes the one in front. A driver who is speeding can cause serious damage to the vehicle and people inside. In addition, a rear end collision at a street corner can push other vehicles into the intersection, causing further accidents.
Why Are Intersections So Dangerous?
Intersection major accidents can lead to injuries and death to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. What is it about intersections that makes them one of the most dangerous places for a driver and others? One reason is the complexity of the average intersection. Vehicles are crossing the intersection going forward or turning onto an intersecting street. Usually, there are several lanes of traffic, and some have pedestrian crosswalks. Major accidents are caused when a driver fails to obey the rules of the road and puts themselves and others in danger.
Negligence in an Intersection Major Accident
So, what are the types of errors that lead to a major accident in an intersection? Let’s look at a few:
- Speeding: Drivers who speed can easily lose control of their vehicle. They are often unable to stop in time to avoid an accident.
- Ignoring traffic signals: Drivers who run a red light or otherwise fail to stop are more likely to cause an accident.
- Distracted driving: By allowing themselves to be distracted, drivers are setting the stage for an accident. Common distractions include texting, talking on a cell phone, looking at the GPS, or eating.
- Drunk driving: Impaired driving causes the loss of 10,000 lives each year. Many such accidents happen at intersections.
- Poor design: When an intersection is poorly designed, it leads to accidents. This can be due to poor or absent signage, sun glare, dysfunctional traffic systems, defective roads, and many other problems. If this is the reason an accident occurred, the injured party can file a lawsuit against the city.
What an Attorney Can Do For You
An attorney can investigate an accident in order to see why it happened. Since an accident without negligence is unable to proceed as a personal injury claim, establishing fault is important. In intersection accidents, this proof of negligence is complicated. An experienced lawyer uses all the tools at his or her disposal, such as the reconstruction of the accident scene and interviewing witnesses.
Once this is done, the attorney can negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company. If the insurer reneges on their responsibility, the attorney can file a lawsuit in civil court. Generally, the presence of an attorney raises the likelihood that negotiations will be successful. If a government agency is involved in the lawsuit, the attorney can make sure all documents are filed in time. The time limit for filing a claim is different with government entities as opposed to other personal injury claims.
