Loose items can become deadly in a car crash, and clutter causes distractions. Recently, I was attempting to get into the passenger seat of my friend’s car. He pulled up in front of my office to pick me up for lunch. It happened to be raining at the time. It took my friend several minutes to clear the front passenger seat of all the clutter so I could sit down in his ride. Needless to say, I got real wet.

Vehicle Organizational Tips

Help make your car or truck safer and cleaner with these vehicle organization tips.

• Get rid of your garbage. An empty coffee cup here, gum wrapper there, soon your vehicle resembles the overflow of a filled garbage can. Keep a trash bag in your car. Every time you go to the gas station, empty it out.

• Keep larger items such as purses, groceries, and gym bags in your trunk. In the case of an accident, you will not have to maneuver around them if you have to exit your vehicle from a door other than the driver’s side door.

• Have designated areas to store your belongings. For example, first aid kit in the trunk, important registration and insurance information in the glove compartment, phone charger and gum in the center console. Find a dedicated place for the items you like to keep in your vehicle. If you notice you haven’t used something in a while, take it out of your car. Less clutter is better.

• Passengers aren’t the only things that need to be restrained in a car or truck. In a 35 mile per hour crash, even an item as light as a tablet can turn into a deadly weapon if it hits someone during a collision. Smaller items such as garage-door openers and cell phones can slip under your brake or gas pedal preventing you from coming to a stop. Keep these items properly secured in your center console or in a cup holder for your safety and the safety of those riding in your car with you.

• Keep your trunk clear of seasonal items, such as beach chairs or tire chains unless you will need them in the very near future. If you were to break down on the side of the highway having your must haves handy, such as flashlights, jumper cables, and a first aid kit in a dedicated cargo organizer will save you time and the hassle of having to dig for the needed items in the trunk.

• Making sure to remove valuable items and mail with your personal information on them will help to reduce your chances of becoming the victim of a car or truck break in.
