West Nile Virus Activity
West Nile virus activity is widespread and intense in Yolo and Sacramento counties. According to Sacramento-Yolo Vector and Mosquito Control, this requires Elk Grove to receive careful monitoring. If more West Nile virus activity is found, aerial spraying to abate mosquitoes infected with the deadly virus may become necessary, they said.
Results of laboratory testing should be available later this week. The information from the lab testing will help make a proper determination about spraying, according to an official news release.
First West Nile Virus Death Reported in Sacramento County
A few days ago, the California Department of Public Health reported that the first death in California in 2016 related to the West Nile virus occurred in Sacramento County. Additionally, authorities are awaiting confirmation of all the non-fatal cases from the county Department of Public Health.
Symptoms of Neuroinvasive Cases
Symptoms from the neuroinvasive cases of West Nile virus may cause sufferers to experience symptoms such as high fever, headache, coma, neck stiffness, seizures and paralysis. As of August 2016, authorities said, 10 human West Nile virus cases have been confirmed in California, including two in the County of Yolo.
Many Sample Mosquitos and Dead Birds Have Tested Positive
In addition to the confirmed human West Nile virus case in the County of Sacramento, 340 samples of mosquitos and 343 dead birds have already tested positive for West Nile virus in 2016.
In the County of Yolo, over 160 mosquitos and more than 47 dead birds have turned out to be West Nile virus positive.
