Elk Grove Crash Injures Child
Elk Grove Crash Injures Child
I’m Ed Smith, an Elk Grove car accident lawyer. The Halloween holiday weekend has come to an end, however, the weather conditions have not. The bad road conditions on Halloween night proposed higher risks to pedestrians trick or treating. Unfortunately, a child was injured by a vehicle while celebrating his treat day on Monday, October 31, 2016 in Elk Grove.
What Happened?
A vehicle was driving on a road along the Creekside Christian Church in Elk Grove. Officers from the Elk Grove Police Department reported that an 8-year-old child, for unknown reasons, ran into the street after departing from an event at the church. The driver of the vehicle crashed into the child. The extent of the injuries the child sustained from the accident have not been released by authorities, however, the child is expected to survive.
Halloween Statistics
The American Automobile Association declared the infamous Halloween holiday as the most fatal day for pedestrians. The Department of Motor Vehicles added that children are twice as likely to be struck and killed by a vehicle on Halloween than any other holiday.
Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrian accidents occur when the driver of a motor vehicle is found committing the following driving errors:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Failing to use turn signals
- Not driving cautiously under bad traffic or weather conditions
- Failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Failing to obey traffic signals or signs
For pedestrian accidents involving kids, the risk of a child being struck by a vehicle are higher due to low visibility and because the actions of a child are so unpredictable. The age range of children that are at the greatest risk of being crashed into by a vehicle are those between the ages of 5 and 9-years old. Drivers are expected to exercise more caution when driving in the vicinity of children in areas such as neighborhoods, parks and schools.
