Accident on State Route 99 Caused Four-Vehicle Pile Up

Drunk driving may have been involved in an accident near Elk Grove on July 25, resulting in an injury. The collision was reported at around 10:30 p.m. along northbound S.R. 99 just south of the Dillard Road off-ramp. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who responded to the accident reported that the collision involved a 4-door sedan, a Toyota Tacoma pickup, a Ford F-150, and a GMC Acadia SUV.

Vehicles Sustain Major Damage in Elk Grove Accident

The accident blocked the highway’s fast lane, with one of the vehicles in the center divider and another on the right-hand side of the road. The sedan sustained major damage to both its front and rear-end, while the GMC had moderate rear-end damage, and another vehicle exhibited damage to its front end. The roadway was cleared about an hour later.

Drunk Driver May Have Been Involved in Multiple-Vehicle Crash

At least one person was transported by first responders to Kaiser Permanente South Medical Center. A phlebotomist was called to the hospital to administer a test to check the alcohol content of one person because drunk driving was suspected by the authorities. The multiple-vehicle collision is being investigated to determine how it occurred and to assign fault.

Causes of a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

A multiple-vehicle crash can happen for many reasons, but negligence is normally the cause. When a number of vehicles are involved, more than one driver may be guilty of negligence, which makes it important when injured to seek the help of an injury attorney. In this way, the injured party can obtain the compensation they deserve. Some causes of a multiple-vehicle crash on a highway include:

  • Speeding is a major cause of all types of traffic collisions.
  • Tailgating is dangerous, especially on a highway, because a sudden slowdown upfront can result in a rear-end collision that involves other vehicles.
  • Distracted driving is a big cause of a multiple-vehicle crash, a major reason being texting or talking on a cell phone. Even though it is legal to use a cell phone in California if it is hands-free, statistics have shown that it can be just as dangerous as handling a device while driving.
  • Fatigued driving is becoming more common as a cause of a multiple-vehicle crash because so many people work more than one job and keep irregular hours.
  • Drunk drivers and those who are using drugs react similarly when driving. Besides weaving in and out of their lane, they cannot judge the distance to other vehicles, have problems tracking and show poor judgment.

Advice From a Personal Injury Lawyer

When a multiple-vehicle crash occurs, you can be certain that others who were involved will seek the advice of a lawyer. For some, it’s an attempt to avoid liability. Their insurance companies will want to avoid liability too. A lawyer experienced in handling multiple-vehicle accidents can help you get fair compensation, which includes gathering evidence to support your claim. This includes:

  • Checking for mistakes in the police report
  • Interviewing witnesses
  • Looking at video footage from surveillance cameras
  • Performing accident reconstruction
