The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

If you have never treated yourself to the experience of watching a Shakespeare play on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe, make this the year that it happens! This season’s performance, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), is a lighthearted comedy featuring two guys in Converse sneakers touching on aspects of each of The Bard’s plays. If you are not into tragedies and would prefer a show that will make you smile after such a rough year, the 2021 performance will not disappoint.

History of Shakespeare on Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival was born in 1972. That year it held a modest production at Sugar Pine Point State Park. It remained there until 1974, when maintenance issues forced the production to shut down. The troupe resurrected a few years later at Tahoe City’s Skylandia Park, where it enjoyed steady attendance growth until it outgrew that facility.

In 1979, a small stage was built at Sand Harbor, part of the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, and nine performances were held that summer. Attendance continued to grow. In 1994, the Incline Village Crystal Bay Visitors Bureau took over the production and management of the Sand Harbor Shakespeare performances. In 1995, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival became incorporated as a non-profit organization, and a two million dollar, state-of-the-art stage set was built, which was dedicated at the beginning of the 2000 season.

In recent years, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, which is part of a unique alliance with Boise’s Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Cleveland, Ohio’s Great Lakes Theater, hosts more than 33,000 patrons every summer.

Eat and Drink at Shakespeare on Lake Tahoe

The on-site restaurant, Shakespeare’s Kitchen, in partnership with Brimm’s Catering, serves a delicious array of food and beverages. The kitchen is open from 5:30 p.m. to 7:20 p.m., with a re-opening at intermission.

While certain parts of the theater once enjoyed table service, there have been changes to the dining protocol for the 2021 season due to COVID-19. This year, food must be pre-ordered, and it will be delivered to those in the Premium and Café Table seating sections. The pre-ordered food and beverages may also be picked up in person by the patron at Shakespeare’s Kitchen. Orders must be picked up by 7:20 p.m.

The 2021 season also brings with it a new “Grab & Go” menu for pre-orders that will include designated pickup locations for different seating sections. Shakespeare’s Kitchen also includes a full bar.

August Performance Calendar

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) runs every day (except for Mondays) through August 22, 2021. Showtime is at 7:30 nightly. The Lake Tahoe area cools off considerably after the sun goes down, so remember to dress in layers, or bring a blanket to wrap up in.
