Eureka 101 Injury Collision
I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka car accident lawyer. On Monday, August 14, 2017, a collision in Eureka on Highway 101 caused traumatic injuries to multiple individuals. The accident also congested traffic in the city’s major thoroughfare.
What Happened?
California Highway Patrol (CHP)’s traffic incident information center reported that a collision occurred at around 3:06 p.m. on the northbound section of Highway 101 near Harper Motors on the north side of Eureka. The collision reportedly involved two vehicles including a black SUV and another vehicle of unreported make and model.
CHP indicated that one of the vehicles collided head-on with the broadside of the other and that both overturned as a result of the impact. Pictures of the incident show major damages to the SUV.
Injuries
After emergency dispatch received a call reporting a multiple vehicle collision on 101, first responders were sent to the site of the crash. CHP said that responding officials reportedly found “several people” with injuries including possible back and neck trauma.
Additionally, one individual was reported to have been trapped inside one the wrecked vehicles and was extricated by firefighters from the Humboldt Bay Fire Department.
Public Concern
Residents of the area responded to the accident online, noting that the stretch of highway connecting Eureka to Arcata has been the site of a large number of car accidents. This stretch of road is currently designated as a “safety corridor” and has a lower speed limit than other parts of the highway. However, residents claimed that more needs to be done.
One resident suggested that drivers on the road should simply slow down and drive more carefully. Others disagreed and argued that CalTrans should build overpasses and on-ramps at major intersections along this stretch of highway.
Rollover Collisions
A rollover collision has the potential to be very serious. In fact, rollover collisions are among the most dangerous types of auto accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that rollover collisions kill about 42,000 individuals every year and account for about 30 percent of vehicle occupant accident fatalities.
Rollover Collision Stats
According to NHTSA, rollover collisions:
- Are usually single-vehicle crashes
- Usually occur at speeds over 50 miles per hour
- Most often fatally injure occupants who are not wearing seat belts
- Usually involve drivers who are male and under 40 years old
- Usually occur on two-way roads without dividing barriers
