Fairfield Driver Survives Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield car accident lawyer. On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, a UPS truck driver and resident of Fairfield drove off of a road in the bay area, causing his vehicle to plunge more than 40 feet before colliding with a tree. The man remained missing for several hours after his vehicle was discovered, but was eventually found.
Accident Details
Reports indicate that the driver had been driving on Hunsaker Canyon Road in Lafayette and that the accident occurred a short time after 5 p.m. Authorities were first alerted to the situation when the victim himself called 911 for help. According to Lafayette Police Chief Eric Christensen, the driver reported that he had been injured as a result of the accident, but shortly after he reported his injuries the cell phone signal was lost. Christensen stated that the driver’s phone had apparently either died or had some malfunction that caused them to lose the call.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Response to the incident started immediately and video of the local fire department’s response to the incident shows emergency responders scaling the steep embankment to reach the crashed vehicle. However, when responders reached the vehicle they found the injured man was not inside.
The Lafayette Police Department reported that it is not uncommon for victims of collisions to rescue themselves and walk away from the site of the accident, but that no residents of the area had reported seeing an injured man and that the driver’s supervisors at UPS had not had contact with him since before the accident.
Officers from the Fairfield Police Department attempted to locate the man at his Fairfield residence but found that nobody was home when they knocked on his door.
In order to ensure that the injured man was not stranded in the woods of the hillside which he had crashed, more than two dozen search and rescue workers, as well as a search canine, were dispatched to the scene of the crash in order to search for him. Search and Rescue Coordinator Rick Kovar noted to reporters that the search was made more difficult by the steepness of the terrain and how dark it was while they conducted their search.
Found at Last – Fairfield Driver Survives Crash
The search ended just before 11 p.m. that night (almost six hours after officials had received the initial distress call) when authorities received a call that confirmed the missing man was safe and staying at the home of a friend in nearby Concord. Shortly thereafter, the injured man was taken into police custody for evaluation.
Accident Causes
So far, no officials have reported whether or not they believe drugs and/or alcohol to have played a part in causing the accident. It is possible that the driver had been not paying attention to the road, that his vehicle had some fault that caused him to veer off of the road, that he was forced off of the road by another driver, or that hazardous road conditions caused the accident. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
