Fairfield Hit-and-Run
I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield car accident lawyer. In Fairfield, on Sunday, February 5, 2017, a hit-and-run accident resulted in damage to the property of a Fairfield resident.
Incident Details
Police records indicate that the incident took place just before 9:30 a.m. somewhere on the 0 block of Waterman Boulevard, not far from K.I. Jones Elementary School. When officials arrived at the scene of the accident, they found that a vehicle had driven into the front yard of a home and damaged the chain link fence in front of the yard as well as the porch. The resident of the property heard the car accident happen, but did not see the vehicle and could not report the make and model to the police.
Nobody was injured in the hit-and-run incident and officers of the Fairfield Police Department are still investigating the incident in order to find out who is responsible for the property damage.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
Hit-and-run accidents such as this often happen suddenly and leave victims confused as to what steps they should take. Some actions that one can take after being involved in a hit-and-run accident that can help with finding the errant driver and receiving compensation include:
Reporting the Accident Promptly
If your hit-and-run accident occurs in the state of California and the accident resulted in more than $750 worth of damages to property or caused injury and/or death, then it is required by law that you report the hit-and-run to the Department of Motor Vehicles. However, in addition to complying with the state law, reporting the accident as soon as you possibly can, preferably only moments after the accident happens, is often critical in finding the driver who left the scene of the accident. The sooner a hit-and-run accident is reported to the police, the sooner they are able to begin investigating and the greater likelihood the negligent driver will be found and held responsible for damages.
When reporting a hit-and-run accident to the authorities, it is important to provide officials with the most information about the accident that you possibly can. Any information about what happened, the car, or the driver, is useful to investigating officers. If there were witnesses to the hit-and-run, it is good to have them provide testimony to the police. Finally, if any video was taken of the accident, it can be extremely helpful to police.
Get Your Injuries Treated
Many victims of hit-and-run accidents neglect to seek treatment for their injuries out of the fear that they will not be able to cover their medical expenses (usually, the at-fault driver’s insurance pays for this, but when that driver is missing, the process is more complicated). However, even if you are not sure how the bills are going to be paid, seeking treatment should be a top priority. Not only is this important for your health, but can also be a critical factor when filing a claim.
