Fairfield Hit-and-Run Causes Chemical Spill

Fairfield Crash Causes Chemical Spill

On Thursday, December 14, a hit-and-run auto accident caused a chemical spill on a major Fairfield thoroughfare and left one involved individual with traumatic injuries.

Accident Details

Fairfield Police Department (FDP) reported that an 18-year-old Fairfield resident had been spotted driving over the speed limit at about 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of Walters Road and Air Base Parkway. An officer reportedly attempted to pull over the speeding vehicle but the driver continued down Air Base Parkway.

While continuing to speed down the roadway, the vehicle struck a pickup truck carrying various pool cleaning supplies between Clay Bank Road and Dover Avenue. The speeding driver continued driving after striking the pickup truck but was stopped by police officers soon thereafter.

The pickup truck reportedly spilled its contents onto the roadway, causing traffic shutdowns for several hours as workers cleaned the dangerous chemicals.

Injuries

Responding officials found that the driver of the pool service vehicle had sustained traumatic injuries as a result of the collision. The nature of his injuries was not reported, but it was noted that they were not life-threatening.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

Hit-and-Run collisions are a problem that is becoming more prevalent in the United States and the upward trend of hit-and-run frequency has been going on for over a decade. As early as the year 2003, reports indicated that California hit-and-runs had increased by a dramatic margin and that California had the greatest percentage of drivers who flee from fatal accident scenes.

Data published by researchers at UC Berkeley indicates that hit-and-runs are a significant problem in Fairfield as well. In the period of time between the beginning of 2009 and the end of 2016, Fairfield saw a total of 425 hit-and-run auto accidents resulting in injuries.

Hit-and-Run Stats in Fairfield

Of Fairfield’s 425 injury hit-and-run crashes over the past 7 years, 12 percent involved pedestrians, 24 percent involved bicycles, and 3 percent involved motorcycles. Additionally, 27 percent of these auto accidents occurred on highways within the city’s borders.

Only one of these accidents resulted in a fatal injury. 18 caused severe injuries, 90 caused moderate injuries, and 316 caused minor injuries indicated by a complaint of pain from individuals involved in the collision.

The most frequent type of hit-and-run accident in Fairfield is, by a large margin, rear-end accidents. In fact, rear-end accidents accounted for nearly 47 percent of injury-related hit-and-run auto accidents in Fairfield during 2009-2016. The next most-common hit-and-run accident type was sideswipe accidents, which only accounted for around 14 percent. After sideswipes, broadside accidents and vehicle/pedestrian accidents were the most common at about 12 and 11 percent respectively.
