Fairfield Hosts Start Smart Class – The Solano Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) is hosting a class for young drivers on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at the John F. Kennedy library in Fairfield. The course invites both teens and their parents to attend to receive valuable education and information about roadway safety. CHP stated that the goal of the program is to reduce the rate of accidents involving teenage drivers that result in serious and even fatal injuries. The class is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 8:15 at the library located at 505 Santa Clara Street in Fairfield. The course is free and open to all young drivers and parents who wish to attend. Additionally, signing up for the event is not required.

The Program

The event will be part of the “Start Smart” program. This program is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through funds provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The program is a direct response to statistics showing just how dangerous roadways can be for teens. According to recent data, young drivers who have just gotten a driver’s license are around five times more likely to be involved in car accidents than more experienced motorists. Additionally, car accidents are the number one cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 20 years old.

The Start Smart class will review roadway rules and regulations as well as show attendees video clips and movies that are made to keep teens and parents informed. Topics covered will include the restrictions placed on teen drivers. It will also provide safety information including how to avoid distracted driving, drive defensively, and more.

Teen Collision Factors

There are a few key reasons that teens tend to be involved in more accidents than adults. Some of these reasons include:

Speeding: Young drivers often feel invincible. For this reason, many teenagers don’t worry about driving recklessly and tend to drive their vehicles at a higher rate of speed.
DUI: Despite many awareness campaigns, drunk driving continues to be a problem amongst drivers of all ages. However, young adults are less likely to know their limits and often make the mistake of thinking it is ok to drive buzzed.
Distracted Driving: While this issue also affects older drivers, teenagers use their phones at a higher rate than ever. Texting while driving removes attention from the road, and frequently causes easily avoidable accidents.
Inexperience: Young drivers simply haven’t had much experience behind the wheel. Not having a feel for how your vehicle responds to certain maneuvers can make it difficult to avoid a collision.
