Several People Require Extraction After Multiple-Vehicle Crash
A multiple-vehicle crash in Fairfield on April 24 sent two people to the hospital. According to the Fairfield Fire Department, the accident involved three vehicles and occurred along I-80 eastbound at Air Base Parkway around 1:46 p.m. Due to the extensive vehicle damage, several people had to be extricated. Battalion Chief Larry Palmer reported that two people were transported to a hospital to treat their injuries. The extent of those injuries is unknown at this time.
Determining Liability in a Multiple-Vehicle Crash
When more than two vehicles collide, each one may be struck more than once, increasing the injuries to those inside. In most cases, negligence by one or more of the drivers is what leads to an accident of this type. Determining liability requires an investigation to find out not only why it happened but also what types of negligence were involved. Following are some of the more common types of negligence that lead to a multiple-vehicle crash:
- One driver may have been speeding, which led to the accident involving other vehicles.
- A motorist may have been tailgating, preventing the driver from stopping to avoid crashing into the other cars.
- A drunk driver may have caused the accident because they could not safely operate a vehicle.
- Being overly tired while driving can affect the motorist the same way being inebriated would, which could lead to a multiple-vehicle crash.
How a Multiple-Vehicle Crash Investigation Is Conducted
When someone is injured in an accident, it has to be proved that the other driver or an outside cause was responsible. However, when a multiple-vehicle crash occurs, it isn’t unusual for negligence to be found in more than one of the drivers. This is why it is essential to conduct an investigation to determine fault. Our investigators are highly experienced in collecting evidence to prove a client’s claim. Some of the areas which are investigated include:
- Our accident investigators go to the site of the multiple-vehicle crash as soon as possible to photograph the scene and vehicles and gather evidence. Streaks of paint on vehicles and metal pieces dropped at the scene can help determine which vehicles struck others and in what order.
- The incident report in the police file is examined for errors. If mistakes are found, they must be corrected because they could interfere with the injured person’s ability to file a claim.
- Traffic and other cameras in the area are examined. If the accident was caught on film, it could be subpoenaed as evidence in your case.
- The investigators talk to any witnesses to the accident and take statements from them. At times, a witness filmed the accident on their smartphone, showing exactly how it happened.
- Finally, accident reconstruction is performed and shows the initial positioning of the vehicles, how the crash occurred, and where they ended up in the roadway.
All this information and evidence is used by our injury lawyers in fashioning a solid case to support our client’s claim for compensation.
