Fairfield Pedestrian Crash Causes Deadly Trauma

On Friday, May 8, 2020, a Fairfield pedestrian crash left one person with deadly injuries. The decedent was identified on Monday, May 11, 2020, as Julieanne Sweeney, a 39-year-old woman with an unknown city of residence. According to reports from Solano California Highway Patrol (CHP), the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Crash Information

The accident happened at about 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Idaho and Fifth Streets. Police reported that Sweeny was lying down in the roadway when she was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was identified as a male resident of Fairfield who had been driving to work in the early morning.

Response

After the collision, the driver came to a stop and left his vehicle. After a short search, he discovered Sweeney had been injured and immediately contacted police. The driver reportedly remained at the crash scene and was waiting for police when they arrived.

Officers reaching the site of the collision discovered Sweeney with severe trauma. Sadly, she could not recover and passed away on-site.

Investigation

CHP has not reported any suspected causes in relation to this accident. Collisions like this one can be complicated to investigate and often involve multiple factors. Because police are unable to speak to the decedent, it can be difficult for them to fully understand the events leading up to the accident. In many cases, this means that critical evidence like issues with the road or defective car parts is never found. To ensure that the collision is investigated thoroughly, it’s important to have help from a Fairfield wrongful death lawyer with the skills and resources necessary to complete a private crash investigation.

Pedestrian Accidents in Fairfield

Over the last ten years for which data is available (2008-2019), there were 7,469 traumatic vehicle accidents in the city of Fairfield that were reported to officials agencies. Out of these accidents, 458 (about six percent) involved a pedestrian. While only around one percent of Fairfield’s traumatic accidents resulted in deadly injuries, pedestrian-involved collisions had a fatality rate of nearly four percent. This means that pedestrians were about four times as likely to suffer deadly trauma during an accident.

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable because they do not have the same protections that vehicle drivers do. Without airbags, seatbelts, steel walls, or other safety features, pedestrians can be seriously hurt even in minor accidents. For this reason, drivers are expected to stay alert and focused and look out for pedestrians at all times.

Getting Help

After a deadly crash, families are in a difficult situation. The pain of losing a loved one combined with the financial burdens of lost income and/or services, can leave grieving families wondering how they will be able to recover. These concerns are important. The best way to make sure that you and your family can obtain financial stability after a deadly crash is by reaching out to a wrongful death attorney with experience working on wrongful death cases.
