Fairfield Receives Funding for Traffic Safety Operations
Residents of the city of Fairfield can expect to see increased enforcement over the next 12 months due to a recent grant from the California Office of Safety (OTS). The Fairfield Police Department (FPD) announced that they received the grant on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, from OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grant, which is worth over $200,000, will go toward extra enforcement operations across the city over the next year.
Enforcement Plans and More
FPD has indicated that they will be using the money to run additional DUI checkpoints and will be issuing more citations for bicyclist, pedestrian, and motorcyclist traffic violations. In addition to increased enforcement, FPD will also be using the funds to conduct officer training programs. Officers will receive training on the effects of intoxicants on drivers who are under the influence.
Furthermore, a portion of the grant is earmarked for technology upgrades to the city’s reporting database. This means that Fairfield will be able to more easily report traffic information to the state. FPD reported that their tech upgrades will “allow for more timely data transfers” and that this would save the city money by reducing reproduction costs and staffing requirements for thousands of accident reports.
Reducing Accidents
FPD also released a statement indicating that their enforcement operations would take place several times every week. The enforcement seeks to combat dangerous traffic violations that frequently result in injury-causing accidents. Violations mentioned by FPD included cellphone usage, speeding, and neglecting to wear a seat belt.
Reportedly, FPD’s traffic unit will be in charge of administering the funds, which will be distributed from October 1, 2020, until September 30, 2021. FPD has indicated that these grants are awarded to cities based on accident rates as well as assessments of municipal plans to reduce collisions.
Reckless Driving and Traffic Safety
While there are many crash factors that drivers can’t control, the large majority of accidents are primarily caused by a motorist who neglects to follow the rules of the road. In Fairfield, the leading cause of traumatic car accidents over the last ten years has been speeding, followed by improper turning, right-of-way violations, and DUI. Altogether, these violations accounted for just under three-quarters of injury-causing crashes in the city.
Tragically, reckless drivers frequently cause accidents that result in very serious or even fatal injuries. Thankfully, injured parties and their families can seek compensation from reckless drivers as well as other at-fault parties to accidents, including auto product manufacturers and governments responsible for roadway maintenance. This can be accomplished by filing a personal injury claim.
Injury Claim Compensation
Because car accident injuries can have a huge impact on your life, the compensation available through injury claims covers a wide range of damages. While every case is different, crash survivors can often claim payments for economic losses like medical bills, damaged property, and lost income, as well as for damages related to personal suffering. To learn more about what compensation may be available to you, it’s best to speak personally to a trusted lawyer.
