Bruceville Road in Elk Grove Area Site of Tractor Collision

A farm tractor accident with a motor vehicle happened in a rural area of Elk Grove on July 16 and resulted in minor injuries. The collision, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), occurred around 6:26 in the morning along Bruceville Road just south of Eschinger Road and involved a Nissan Rogue. Sacramento Fire Department emergency responders were called to the scene to assess injuries. A tow truck was required to remove the car. The CHP is investigating to determine how the car and farm tractor accident occurred.

Tractor Accidents

Farm equipment is not designed with safety in mind. It is meant for hard work.  Out of every three farmworker deaths, one is due to an accident with a motor vehicle. In one study, the majority of the farm tractor accidents with a motor vehicle occurred during daylight hours. The peak time for this was in the hours between 3:00 in the afternoon and 6:00 p.m. Inclement weather adds to the risk of a farm tractor accident.

Of all types of impacts, daytime side-swipes were most common in tractor accidents, with only 8 percent linked to rear-end collisions. This flips once it becomes dark, with rear-end accidents taking the lead at 42 percent. This may be due to the fact that tractors cannot stop quickly, and when a vehicle in front of them stops suddenly, a rear-end accident can happen. Alternately, if a  passenger vehicle runs into a farm equipment vehicle, the lack of reflective tape or lights on the tractor may have been the cause of the collision.

A Farm Tractor Turning Left

A farm tractor making a left turn often leads to an accident with a passenger vehicle. This occurred in 52 percent of crashes during daylight hours. Part of the reason for this is that the passenger vehicle may not be prepared for a left-turning tractor and slams into the side of the farming vehicle.

Farm Tractors on the Highway

Farming equipment is often seen on rural roads and highways where many passenger vehicle crashes occur. One of the chief reasons is the influx of people moving to rural areas. Most of the new residents are from urban areas and do not have a working knowledge of problems due to the design of a farm tractor. Essentially, they are not aware of the time it takes for this large vehicle to make a turn or stop. By treating a farm tractor as another passenger vehicle, the number of accidents escalates. Finally, rural roads are often narrow, and passing is already restricted.

Rollover in a Farm Tractor Accident

The incidence of farm tractor rollovers is high, particularly in older models. This is because the newer models are equipped with rollover protection systems. However, more than 50 percent of farm tractors in the United States lack rollover protection. They also lack seat belts. When the farm tractor is equipped with rollover protection, the number of fatalities decreases.

If the tractor is equipped with a roof, the possibility of a roof crush in a rollover accident exists. This occurs when the infrastructure meant to support the weight of the vehicle in a rollover is inadequate. When this occurs, the manufacturer or designer of the tractor can be held liable.

Investigation of a Farm Tractor Accident

At our firm, we send investigators to the accident scene to determine who was at fault. This means we look for evidence and use accident reconstruction techniques to determine liability. We also speak to witnesses and review police reports for mistakes. Some accidents may be at an intersection where traffic cameras have been installed, and we obtain this footage to see the accident as it happened. Once all the evidence has been gathered, our investigators turn it over to our legal team who use it when building a robust case for our client.
