Accident Along Highway 160 Ends in Driver’s Fatality
A bicyclist found a fatal accident on a rural Delta road on May 1 near Clarksburg. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the bicycle rider contacted the police through 911 at about 9:20 in the morning because they had discovered an SUV overturned off Highway 160 (River Road) on the levee. Upon arriving at the accident scene, officers discovered the single occupant in the vehicle had died. She was identified as a resident of Rancho Cordova, age 24.
Investigation Into the Cause of the Fatal Accident
Investigators with the CHP determined the motorist had been traveling north along River Road, which has two lanes when her vehicle swerved left and struck a guardrail. Her older Dodge Durango SUV overturned and ended up on the bank of the Sacramento River. The vehicle’s motor had cooled when police arrived at the scene, and they are attempting to find out when the fatal accident occurred. The highway remained shut down until around 1:00 p.m. as the investigation was conducted.

Causes of a Single-Vehicle Fatal Accident
Unfortunately, Run-off-road accidents are far too common and can occur for several reasons that don’t involve driver negligence. Some of those reasons include:
- Mechanical failure: A vehicle with a defect in the steering, brakes, tires, or motor can end up causing an accident fatality when the driver crashes. If it is discovered that the accident’s cause was due to a defect in the vehicle, the manufacturer, part designer, and others may be held liable through a product liability lawsuit. This is why a vehicle should be retained following an accident. In this way, our engineers can examine it for defects.
- Government negligence: A government entity is always in charge of maintaining a roadway. However, a pothole, poor lighting, weakened or outdated guardrails, and other problems can lead to an accident fatality. In these cases, the government entity can be held liable. However, because the timeline for filing is much shorter, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a personal injury lawyer.
- Hit-and-run driver: A driver that strikes another vehicle and flees the scene of the accident fatality is more and more common these days. If they can be located by investigating to see if this is what happened, the family can place a claim against them.
