Highway 99 Accident Occurs When Two Vehicles Strike Pedestrian
A fatal accident occurred in South Sacramento on February 23 after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle along Highway 99. The police report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that officers arrived at around 9:15 in the evening to the accident scene on the southbound lanes of the highway near the exit for Mack Road. It was discovered that two different vehicles struck the pedestrian in the fast lane, and that individual was declared deceased at the scene.
Traffic Diverted as Fatal Accident Is Investigated
Traffic was closed down along all the southbound lanes and diverted onto Mack Road. Authorities are investigating to determine why the pedestrian was in the roadway and how the fatal accident occurred. The motorist who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene. The name of the pedestrian who died in the accident has not yet been released pending the notification of the family.
Fatal Injuries in a Pedestrian Accident
All too often, a pedestrian dies after being hit by a motor vehicle. This occurs because a pedestrian lacks any sort of protection in addition to the weight and size differential between them and a motor vehicle. As drivers continue to ignore or simply be unaware of pedestrians, this will not change.
Reasons a Motorist Is Negligent
In terms of a pedestrian accident, there are common reasons why a motorist is negligent:
- Motorists are not geared toward looking for pedestrians, bicyclists, or even motorcyclists. That is why many fatal accidents occur.
- Speeding is a major cause of a fatal accident involving pedestrians. The speed determines the impact of the vehicle such that a pedestrian hit by a car traveling at 50 mph is around 90 percent likely to be killed. Alternatively, a vehicle traveling at 15 mph when it strikes a walker can cause minor to moderate injuries.
- Distracted driving is a problem when it comes to pedestrian traffic. Texting or playing with gadgets in the car can cause a driver to look down and not see a pedestrian entering the crosswalk.
- Drunk drivers are more likely to be involved in a fatal pedestrian accident. Not only do they make poor decisions, but they have difficulty judging the distance between their vehicle and a pedestrian. In addition, many drunk drivers speed through intersections where crosswalks are likely to be found.
- Fatigued drivers are also more likely to be involved in a fatal accident involving a pedestrian. Because a motorist has to be alert to dangers on the roadway, fatigue takes this ability away.
