Fatal Accident Involving Cow Near Stockton
I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton personal injury lawyer. A man was driving his vehicle with four passengers near Stockton during the evening of Friday, August 11, 2017. The driver was unable to avoid a loose cow in the roadway, resulting in a devastating accident.
What Happened?
A 74-year-old Stockton man was driving his 2000 Nissan southbound along Clements Road near Stampedes Road at approximately 8:40 pm. The Nissan was traveling at about 65 mph when three loose cows from the east roadway edge of Clements Road entered into the direct path of the man’s vehicle. The man attempted to pass the cows as he approached them, however, he was unable to avoid one of the cows. The impact from the collision caused the right front passenger area of the Nissan to sustain major damage.
Was Anybody Injured?
The driver and three of the four vehicle passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries following the livestock vehicle collision. The four injured victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The 69-year-old man sitting in the front passenger seat of the Nissan, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
What Caused the Accident?
Authorities have not yet ruled out a factor of the accident. Investigators usually take one to two weeks from the date of the crash to process a Traffic Collision Report.
Animal and Livestock Collisions
Motor vehicle accidents involving livestock and animals can be very scary. Cows and horses are relatively large in size. If a small vehicle is involved in a collision with one of these animals, it can lead to catastrophic or even fatal injuries to vehicle occupants. Animal and livestock owners are compelled to maintain proper control of their animals so they do not enter roadways and cause safety hazards to oncoming vehicles. Owners are also obligated to adequately confine their animals and securely fence their properties to prevent such collisions from occurring.
