Fatal Accident Involving Utility Pole Near Turlock Reservoir

I’m Ed Smith, a Turlock car accident lawyer. A motorist was involved in a single vehicle accident with a utility pole near the Turlock Reservoir on the morning of Thursday, November 16, 2017. Unfortunately, the collision caused the driver to suffer fatal injuries.

We would like to extend our condolences to the loved ones of Marcelo Sanchez who passed away in this devastating tragedy.

Accident Details

A driver was behind the wheel of their 2004 Pontiac traveling northbound along Hawkins Road near East Keyes Road at approximately 6:45 am. The Pontiac approached a rise in the road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The Pontiac veered into the west shoulder of the roadway and collided with a barbed-wire fence. The Pontiac overturned and hit a power pole moments before coming to a rest on its side.

Driver Suffers Fatal Injuries

The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to catch fire, trapping the driver inside. An observant property owner in the area came with a fire extinguisher to contain the flames. Emergency personnel was dispatched to the scene. Sadly, the driver of the Pontiac was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Identity of Victim

Officials identified the driver of the Pontiac as 18-year-old Marcelo Sanchez of Merced.

Causes of Single Vehicle Crashes

A common presumption of single vehicle crashes is that they tend to occur due to driver error. However, this is not always the case. Accidents involving one vehicle may occur for a variety of reasons as a seasoned Turlock car accident lawyer may independently investigate. Such occurrences may happen due to:

Reducing Single Vehicle Accidents

According to a 2015 report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 55 percent of traffic collision fatalities occurred as a result of single vehicle accidents. The first step of reducing your chances of being involved in such accidents is to avoid distracted driving habits such as texting and driving or applying makeup while driving. Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. If you start to feel drowsy while driving, be sure to get off the road and park your vehicle in a safe, well-lit public area. Following the previously mentioned safety tips will help to ensure your safety on the road.
