Multiple Vehicles Involved in Interstate 5 Fatal Collision
A fatal collision occurred near Corning on July 29 after a driver lost control of their vehicle and ended up in the opposing lanes of traffic. The accident was reported around 12:44 p.m. along northbound Interstate 5 at the Rice Creek Bridge.
Authorities with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a silver Infiniti allegedly came off the northbound side of the highway, passed through the center divider, and crashed into a Ram pickup truck hauling a trailer.
Investigation Will Determine Why the Fatal Collision Happened
The incident occurred approximately a mile south of Corning, the California Highway Patrol reported. Four vehicles were involved in the collision, and multiple injuries were reported. The southbound traffic was completely blocked, while traffic continued flowing slightly on the northbound side. Traffic was backed up to Liberal Avenue. Fire department first responders were called to the scene, as well as the county coroner. A total of five parties were declared deceased, authorities said. This included the four occupants in the Infiniti and the Dodge driver. A front-seat passenger in the Ram was treated for serious injuries at an area hospital.
Officials have recently identified the decedents as 52-year-old Randall Schriefer of Morgan Hill, 48-year-old Kelly Schriefer of Morgan Hill, 47-year-old Thomas Bruce of San Diego, 36-year-old Patti Larsen of San Diego, and an 8-year-old from San Diego. Additional information on the fatal multi-vehicle collision on I-5 in Corning was not immediately available. An investigation is being conducted by CHP traffic accident officials to determine how the crash occurred and to assign fault.
