Fatal Crash Near Grass Valley
Fatal Crash Near Grass Valley

I’m Ed Smith, a Grass Valley personal injury attorney. Local authorities recently reported that one person was fatally injured after a collision that took place just east of Grass Valley. The crash was reported by officers of the California Highway Patrol on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. In addition to a fatally injured individual, at least two other people were reported to be involved in this tragic crash. Officials from the county are waiting to release the identity of the decedent until their family is notified. My condolences are extended to those who are mourning after losing their family member and friend due to this tragic accident.

Collision Details

According to reports from CHP, a 50-year-old resident of Grass Valley had been driving east in a 1998 Honda Civic sedan on State Route 20 to the west of the intersection at Chalk Bluff Road. At the same time, a 71-year-old resident of Grass Valley had been driving west on the same highway in a 1994 GMC Sierra, approaching the location of the Civic.

Officers said that the driver of the civic took his attention off of the road to reach for an object in his vehicle. During the time that the driver was distracted, his vehicle drifted across the middle of the highway and into the westbound lane, right into the path of the GMC. The two challenging crashed head-on.

After the impact, the GMC reportedly continued toward the west and eventually overturned. How many times the GMC overturned is unknown. The Honda kept traveling east until it finally slowed and came to a complete stop.

Response

Emergency responders called to the accident scene reported that they found a passenger in the GMC who had sustained severe injuries. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the passenger was tragically declared deceased on-site.

Whether or not either of the drivers were injured during the accident was not reported. No other vehicles or people were reported to have been involved.

Investigation

Although distracted driving was reported as a factor, CHP is still investigating this crash. Officers made it clear that neither driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident. No other suspected factors have been reported so far.

Safety Concerns

Area CHP noted that this is the fourth collision to take place on State Route 20 east of Grass Valley in 2018. Reportedly, officers are working on a strategy to address concerns about dangerous driving behavior in this area in hopes of reducing the high frequency of serious accidents.
