Fatal Crashes in El Dorado County
I’m Ed Smith, a Cameron Park wrongful death lawyer. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, more than 1.3 million individuals die from auto accident injuries every year and over 37,000 of those deaths occur in the United States.
While vehicles and roadways are consistently undergoing safety improvements, the risk of being involved in a fatal collision is always present when using the road. However, understanding this risk and the different factors that contribute to fatal accidents can be helpful in avoiding them. Those who frequently drive in Cameron Park and other areas of El Dorado County may be interested in these statistics regarding fatal crashes in your region.
Fatality Overview
Information gathered from data published by UC Berkeley researchers indicates that, in the time period spanning from the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2016, El Dorado County saw a total of 139 fatal auto accidents. Of these fatal collisions, 4 involved bicycles, 25 involved motorcycles, 11 involved pedestrians, and the remaining 99 involved either passenger vehicles or big rig trucks. 57 of these collisions (41 percent) happened on a highway within the county’s limits.
Injuries and Death
Across 139 separate fatal vehicle accidents, 154 individuals lost their lives, 32 received traumatic injuries, 35 received moderate injuries, and 21 made complaints of pain to responding officials. 154 of the injured or killed individuals had been driving at the time of the accident, 72 had been riding passenger, 12 had been walking outside of a vehicle, and 4 had been riding a bicycle.
Nearly two-thirds of individuals injured or killed in these accidents were male, and the most commonly injured age-range across these collisions were 20 to 24 year olds. Additionally, people between the ages of 15 and 59 were more frequently killed or hurt in fatal accidents than people of other ages.
Pedestrian Fatalities
Fatal pedestrian accidents in El Dorado County are caused in large numbers by one persistent factor. The majority (nearly two-thirds) of El Dorado fatal pedestrian accidents occur when a pedestrian fails to use a crosswalk. Other circumstances, including drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and drivers turning unsafely, only accounted for less than 40 percent of pedestrian fatalities cumulatively.
Cameron Park Fatalities
In Cameron Park itself, only 4 fatal accidents occurred during the time period in question. One occurred at the intersection of Cameron Park Drive and Hacienda Road. Another occurred on Highway 32 just east of the junction at Bass Lake Road. The third happened on Green Valley Road near Pearl Lane and the last happened at the intersection of Deer Valley Road and Green Valley Road. All of these collisions involved only passenger vehicles.
