Fatal Davis Area Highway Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Davis personal injury lawyer. One woman lost her life after being involved in a car accident that took place on a major highway near Davis on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Authorities from the Yolo area California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the accident involved only one vehicle. CHP also noted that the crash caused a dangerous fire on the side of the highway. Authorities from Yolo County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased woman as Brenda Ambriz-Martinez, a 23-year-old resident of the central valley city of Tipton. My sincere sympathies and condolences are with Ambriz-Martinez’s family and loved ones during this tragic time.
Accident Details
Officers stated that the crash took place at about 4:45 p.m. Ambriz-Martinez had been driving on Highway Interstate 80 westbound to the west of the Yolo Causeway. For reasons that are not currently known, her vehicle traveled off of the roadway. After driving off the road, her car struck a nearby tree and immediately caught fire. CHP says that the fire spread very quickly after the initial collision, ultimately burning the vehicle.
In a later report, CHP noted that the vehicle was found on its side and propped up against the trunk of the tree.
Response
Responders arrived at the accident scene to find a dangerous blaze caused by the crashed vehicle. Firefighters from the Davis Fire Department were called to put it out. Tragically, Ambriz-Martinez was not able to be saved from the wreck and was declared deceased by officials at the accident site.
Reports state that westbound traffic on I-80 was slowed almost to a stop for several hours as firefighters and officers from CHP worked to stop the fire and clear the scene of the crash.
Investigation
CHP reports that they are currently investigating what may have caused this fatal accident. So far, no possible causes have been reported by officers. While the reason Ambriz-Martinez lost control of her vehicle is not known, factors that can cause accidents such as this include malfunctioning steering systems, faulty brakes, dangerous roadway hazards, medical emergencies, and more.
Wrongful Death Cases
When a person loses their life due to an accident caused by another party’s negligence, it is usually considered a case of wrongful death. In these cases, the at-fault party can often be held responsible for paying families and dependents for their losses. The damages that can be recovered vary from case to case. However, losses that can often be recovered include things you may not immediately think of such as loss of consortium, loss of inheritance, and more. To learn about what can be recovered after a case of wrongful death, contact an experienced wrongful death lawyer.
