Fatal Head-on Collision in Yuba City
A head-on collision in Sutter County near Yuba City on August 4 along Highway 9 ended in a fatality. The accident, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) happened near Messick Road at about 2:30 p.m. when the driver of a Lexus, traveling northbound on the highway, swerved hard for unknown reasons into the lanes traveling southbound. The maneuver caused the vehicle to crash head-on with another motorist in an SUV. Both of the vehicles became engulfed in flames, leading to the death of the Lexus driver. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.
One Life Saved by Good Samaritans in Head-On Collision
Good Samaritans attempted to save both drivers and were successful in removing the motorist from the SUV traveling southbound. The SUV driver survived but suffered severe injuries and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. The car doors jammed on the Lexus, and it was not possible to pull that driver out. A stretch of Highway 99 in both directions had to be shut down due to the head-on collision. The accident is being investigated by the CHP as to cause. There is no indication at this time that drugs or alcohol was involved. The names of the deceased person and survivor who was hospitalized have not been released pending notification of family.
What a Car Accident Attorney Can Do
Head-on collisions often lead to serious injuries and fatalities. This is due in part to the combined impact of the collision as both vehicles are in a direct trajectory toward each other. Although the total number of head-on collisions that occur is small, they account for 10 percent of all deaths due to a traffic accident. It is important to quickly establish negligence since evidence as to why the crash happened can be lost or be covered up. We dispatch a team of investigators to the accident site to uncover evidence, obtain video footage of the crash if possible, and interview witnesses. This information becomes an integral part of a wrongful death case filed by the family. Our legal team handles all negotiations with the insurance company and prepares to take the case to civil court if necessary. You will not be charged for our services until the claim is successfully resolved.
Causes of Head-On Collisions
Not all head-on collisions are caused by driver error. In many cases, defective auto parts are to blame. For instance, brakes may not work properly and accelerators may stick. In other occurrences, an animal may run into the road, causing the driver to swerve. Owners of livestock are obligated to keep all animals away from the highway under Section 16902 and 16904 of the California food and agriculture laws. Your personal injury attorney will investigate to see if manufacturing mistakes played a role in the crash. If a manufacturer defect was to blame, he or she may file a product liability lawsuit.
