Ways to Help After a Death in the Family
Losing a loved one is a terrible experience, more so if the family member was taken away suddenly. However, there are many ways other family members, co-workers, and friends can help. These include:
- Be there for the grieving family: Pay a visit after the loved one’s death. Just your presence can be consoling and let the family know you care.
- Send flowers, a card, a prepared meal, or other items: Even if you aren’t able to visit, sending a card or gift lets the family know you are thinking about them.
- Offer to run errands: Taking children to school, shopping for groceries, and helping in any way can reduce the stress on the family.
- Funeral planning help: If you are a close friend or a family member, offer to go along with the person making the funeral and burial arrangements. In addition, if they need to purchase clothing for the services, it can be helpful and comforting to have another person along.
- Stay involved after the funeral: The family members are busy and stressed preparing for the funeral. Once it is over, reality hits, and they will realize the finality of the situation. Lives go on, but it is important for friends and other family members to stay in touch by calling, visiting, and helping whenever possible.
Filing a Claim for Wrongful Death After a Motorcycle Crash
Not all motorcycle crashes are driver error. Other reasons for a solo accident can be caused by a sudden slowdown in traffic, debris, slick spots, or gravel in the roadway due to government neglect or a rider being cut off by another motorist. If negligence by another motorist or entity caused the fatality, the family can place a wrongful death claim for compensation, which can help relieve the financial stress of losing a loved one. Persons who can file include:
- Spouse or putative spouse
- Children of the deceased
- Stepchildren if they were supported at least 50 percent by the decedent
- Parents of the decedent if they received at least half their support from the deceased
- If there are no immediate family members, siblings of the deceased may file
Seeking Help From a Seasoned Lawyer
In addition to the grief experienced by family members following a sudden death, it can lead to financial stress. A lawyer experienced in handling these types of cases can help you get the compensation you need. We begin by sending our investigators to the motorcycle crash site to talk to the witnesses and ensure the police report is accurate. Our investigators perform accident reconstruction and check traffic and business surveillance cameras, searching for a video of the crash on tape. In addition, they check for a lack of road maintenance that could have caused the motorcycle crash. Our lawyers go to work to build a strong case once the evidence has been accumulated. That evidence can either be used in negotiating on your family’s behalf with the insurance company or preparing a court case.
