Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Coffee Road in Modesto
A fatal motorcycle crash occurred on Coffee Road just north of Modesto on the afternoon of Friday, May 28, 2021. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the collision at approximately 1:45 p.m. near the intersection of Crawford Road and Coffee Road.
Details on the Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Coffee Road
A preliminary investigation by CHP traffic officers revealed that a 36-year-old Ceres man was behind the wheel of a 1996 Ford Explorer SUV. The Ceres man was driving northbound on Coffee Road with a passenger identified as a 35-year-old. A 19-year-old man from Modesto was riding a motorcycle also north on Coffee Road directly behind the Ford.
For unknown reasons, the left side of the Ford was involved in a crash with the biker. The impact of the collision reportedly propelled the motorcyclist off the bike and into a field close to the intersection. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Sadly, the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries approximately three hours after the incident. No one in the Ford was hurt, officials said. Further details on the motorcycle accident, including what caused it and the identity of the decedent, were not immediately available.
Loss of a Loved One in a Wrongful Death Motorcycle Accident
A careless driver may not see a motorcyclist on the road until it is too late. When negligence results in a fatal motorcycle accident, the at-fault party may be held financially accountable for their carelessness. This is generally done through a wrongful death claim filed against the insurance company representing the negligent driver. In other situations, it may be covered under a first-party insurance claim if the negligent driver has little to no coverage to pay for resulting damages. This is possible so long as the biker carries uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
Surviving family members must keep in mind that insurers are focused on protecting their profit margin and do so by paying as little as possible on claims. Some of the common practices insurance carriers use is to place blame on the biker through claims of speeding, reckless driving, etc. Survivors should not agree to sign any documents or accept an offer from the insurer without consulting a Modesto wrongful death lawyer first to learn about their rights and potential options for compensation.
While no amount of money can undo the pain from losing a beloved family member or bring them back, compensation from a wrongful death case can alleviate the financial hardship survivors may face and provide for a more secure future. Let an experienced attorney handle all aspects of your case so you can focus on being there for your family and recovering from your loss without dealing with difficult insurance companies. Types of Wrongful Death Compensation Available for Surviving Family Members
If the worst occurs and a loved one suffers fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash, an attorney can build a strong wrongful death claim on behalf of surviving family members. Compensation in these types of cases is broken down into two types of damages, economic and non-economic. These include:
- Costs of funeral and burial services
- Expenses for medical treatment received by the decedent before they succumbed to their injuries (this is generally recovered through a survival action filed on behalf of survivors)
- Loss of benefits, earnings, and future financial support provided by the deceased
- Mental anguish and emotional distress caused by the wrongful death motorcycle accident
- Loss of companionship, care, guidance, and protection for surviving family members
