Fatal Multiple Vehicle Accident in Novato
I’m Ed Smith, a Novato car accident lawyer. A Novato collision between multiple vehicles along California State Route 37 on July 27 resulted in multiple injuries, according to a report issued by the California Highway Patrol. Investigators with the CHP are working to determine the reason for this accident.
Accident Details
The crash occurred along the highway near the Stone Creek Golf Club and involved a minimum of four vehicles at about 3:00 in the afternoon, according to the CHP. Responders to the crash included members of the sheriff’s office of Marin County, the Novato Fire District and Air Operations arm of the CHP. A Lexus had reportedly stopped in the fast lane heading eastbound because of traffic and was struck by a Ford pickup when the driver was unable to stop. The force of the collision between the Ford and Lexus forced the first vehicle to strike two others.
Results of the Accident
One individual who was riding in the Lexus died at the accident scene. Several others were transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The Lexus driver was reported to have serious injuries, while the other accident victim was reported to have injuries described as minor. The pickup driver was treated at the accident scene by paramedics. The collision between these four vehicles blocked all the eastbound lanes of the highway, and it was opened approximately two hours later to allow authorities to conduct an investigation into a cause of the accident and for damaged vehicles and debris to be removed.
Injuries Suffered in Motor Vehicle Accidents
Any accident in a motor vehicle can result in serious injuries; however, those injuries can be compounded by a multi-vehicle accident when your vehicle is struck numerous times. Brain injuries are common, along with chest trauma and spinal cord injuries. Because serious injuries require extensive hospitalization and resultant expenses, the cost can devastate a family’s finances. When those injuries have been caused by someone who is negligent, such as a drunk driver, distracted driver, a speeding driver or for other reasons, the victim may pursue fair compensation for their financial loss. Granted, that will not help with recovery from a serious injury, but it will take away the worry about how the bills will get paid.
Negligence in a Motor Vehicle Accident
In order to claim damages in a motor vehicle accident, the injury victim must be able to prove that the person at fault was negligent. Many factors go into determining fault and is gathered by a seasoned personal injury lawyer as evidence. This includes examining the police report for accuracy, interviewing witnesses who saw the accident, gathering evidence at the scene and performing a reconstruction of the crash. In addition, the attorney collects evidence of damage to the vehicles and roadway and uses an expert witness to testify. By building a strong case based on evidence, the lawyer can help an accident victim obtain maximum compensation for their injuries.
