Fatal Napa Motorcycle Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Napa car accident lawyer. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office recently identified a motorcyclist who lost his life in a multiple vehicle head-on accident in Napa County on Sunday, September 10, 2017.
Accident Details
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision happened at around 12:00 p.m. east of Napa city on state Highway 121 a short distance north of the Vichy Avenue intersection. Brandon Shepard, a 24-year-old resident of Napa had reportedly been driving a 1995 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the northbound side of the highway when he lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons.
After losing control of his vehicle, Shepard crossed over the center divider and into the southbound side of the highway. Entering the southbound side of the highway put Shepard in the path of an oncoming 2015 Lincoln with which he collided head-on.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and family of Mr. Shepard during this difficult time.
Response and Injuries
After receiving a call alerting them to an accident, CHP dispatched emergency personnel to the collision site. Medical responders found that Shepard had sustained major traumatic injuries as a result of the accident and was transported by ambulance to the nearby Queen of the Valley Medical Center for treatment. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Shepard lost his life.
The driver of Lincoln was reported to have sustained minor injuries for which he received treatment at the scene of the crash before being released.
Causal Factors
CHP officers are currently conducting an investigation in hopes of finding out what factors caused this collision. So far, authorities have not indicated whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident. Other possible collision factors might include driving while fatigued, medical emergency, faulty vehicle parts, roadway defects, and more.
Recovering after Wrongful Death
No amount of money can adequately replace somebody you love. However, those who have lost loved ones due to the negligence of others are able to financially recover for a wide array of damages including things like loss of consortium, loss of income, funeral costs, and medical bills incurred before death.
Motorcycle Safety
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 4,000 people die in U.S. motorcycle accidents every year, with fatal collisions involving motorcycles occurring 27 times more often than passenger vehicle accident fatalities.
NHTSA suggests that motorcyclists who want to remain safe while driving should always be alert and aware of other vehicles on the road, drive defensively and allow themselves plenty of space between other vehicles,. Motorcyclists should make sure they are visible by wearing bright clothing, protect themselves with DOT-compliant helmets, and never operate their vehicles under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
