Fatal Oroville Area Highway Collision- According to officers of California Highway Patrol (CHP), a serious car accident took place near Oroville on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Reports stated that the collision involved four vehicles altogether and left three people with serious injuries. Tragically, one of the injured individuals suffered fatal trauma. The fatally injured man has so far only been identified as a 70-year-old resident of North Highlands. County authorities say that the man’s identity will be released following his family’s notification. My sincere condolences are sent out to the mourning family and friends of the fatally injured man.
Crash Details
Police reports state that the North Highlands man had been driving his vehicle southbound on Highway 70 just before 8:00 p.m. The man had just passed Chandler Road and was approaching the Mariani Packing Company Plant on Sparrow Lane when his vehicle suddenly drifted into the northbound side of the highway. According to reports, three vehicles had been traveling close together in the northbound lane and were all unable to avoid a collision with the wrong-way car. All four vehicles became involved in the crash, one veering off of the highway and striking a tree, another crashing into a nearby power pole.
Response
Emergency staff was immediately sent to the crash site by CHP dispatch. When responders got to the collision scene, they discovered that the 70-year-old man had suffered severe trauma. The man was sadly declared deceased on-site. One more driver and passenger were found injured and both were transported to a nearby hospital to receive emergency care. The severity and nature of their injuries were not reported and updates on their conditions remain unavailable.
Investigation
CHP says that they are working to determine what may have caused the collision to happen. While no suspected factors have been mentioned, investigators stated that they don’t believe any of the drivers had been intoxicated at the time of the accident. Causal factors commonly involved in collisions like this one include defective vehicle parts, medical emergencies, roadway hazards, fatigued driving, and more.
