Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Downtown Sacramento

A fatal pedestrian accident happened in the downtown area of Sacramento, after which the driver fled the scene. The Sacramento Police Department reported that the accident happened on October 5 at the intersection of X Street and 23rd Street shortly before 4:00 in the morning. The pedestrian, a male, was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. The man died later due to his injuries. As of the time of this report, the name of the pedestrian has not yet been released, pending family notification. The police in Sacramento are investigating the pedestrian fatality and searching for the hit-and-run driver.

Contact Police With Information

The vehicle that caused the pedestrian injuries is believed to have been going along X Street eastbound when the accident happened. Police have not provided any information on the vehicle at this time. The Sacramento police are asking that those with information about the accident contact them either at the dispatch center (916) 264-5471, the tip line for hit and run accidents at (916) 808-6030 or at Crime Stoppers (916) 443-HELP.

Unexpected Death of a Family Member

When a family member dies suddenly due to someone’s negligence, they must deal with the shock of the event in addition to a sense of overwhelming grief. Knowing that the decedent’s death might have been avoided adds to their sense of helplessness. Although grief after loss is different for everyone, here are some things a family can do to help them through this difficult time:

  • Establish a strong support system: It is important to let others help you through this period. This includes other family members, counselors and friends. Many have gone through a similar experience, letting you know that you are not alone.
  • Ups and downs: Dealing with grief does not happen in a straight line. Rather, there is progress mixed with setbacks. Understanding this will happen ahead of time makes it easier overall.
  • Establish new routines: Establishing new routines helps differentiate the past from the present. This is especially important for children. If a deceased parent helped the children with homework, find someone else in the family who can fill that void.

Get Answers to Your Questions

One of the first questions I am asked is who is responsible for this accident. Many times in a sudden wrongful death, the answer is hidden due to the complexity of the accident. That is why my firm makes every effort to find out. Not only does this add closure to the family’s questions, but it also helps in determining who was at fault in the crash.

Finding Out Who Is Liable for End of Life Expenses

There are many costly end-of-life expenses such as burial and funeral costs in addition to medical care the person may have received before succumbing. In addition, the family can no longer rely on the decedent’s support. While recovering such losses will not bring back the person you love, it will help relieve the financial worry you are dealing with. One way to do this is to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party. This can be another person or a government agency. In the latter situation, the agency may have reneged on their duty to maintain the road or erect signage, which was a relevant part of the person’s death.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Pedestrian Accidents

In California, drivers are offered uninsured motorist coverage as part of their car insurance. This covers the policyholder whether the accident happens when driving, walking or cycling. As such, it can be used by the family to recover expenses due to the accident. Using it does not increase the rate. In the event the policy does not have UM protection and another driver/family member who lives in the home has this coverage, it can be used to recover damages.

What an Attorney Can Do After a Pedestrian Accident

At our firm, we know the deep pain family members experience after a loved one’s demise. We send out our investigative team to the scene of the accident to gather evidence, obtain a traffic light or storefront video capture of the crash, and interview witnesses. Once we gather all available data, we turn it over to our legal team to build a strong case in our client’s favor.
