Fatality Reported in Highway 4 Antioch Collision

A 42-year-old Hayward woman died after crashing a 2011 Toyota Corolla along Highway 4 near Antioch on Saturday, February 23. California Highway Patrol (CHP) authorities stated that the unidentified woman had been driving in the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 in the moments leading up to the accident. The time stamp of the accident was shortly after 2:00 a.m., and it is not known how fast the car was moving before crashing.  For an unknown reason, the vehicle veered off the roadway. The Toyota then crashed into the metal guard rail that lines the off-ramp for L Street, according to CHP. As a result, there was major vehicle damage and driver injury.

Additionally, no other vehicles or persons were involved in the accident. CHP stated that the woman was unresponsive when found, and she was transported to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The woman’s name has not yet been disclosed due to pending notification of relatives. It has not been determined if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor to the collision. The crash is still under investigation. I would like to briefly take this moment to offer my sincere sorrow and prayers for the loved ones of the victim.

Nighttime Driving Accident Statistics

Nighttime drives can be a completely different experience compared to daytime driving. At night, drivers have a reduced time period to notice and respond to road signs, lane switching, upcoming curves, someone crossing the street, and many other factors that are commonly related to car accidents. For these reasons, driving with caution and heightened awareness is even more important at night.

Driving at night increases accident risk for drivers of all age groups. However, the age group that has been the most negatively affected by driving at night is teenage drivers. While the number of miles driven from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. is just a small 14 percent of the total road time for drivers aged 16 and 17 years old, this same time frame accounts for 32 percent of all fatality auto accidents involving this age group.

Young drivers are already at an obvious disadvantage just based on their lack of driving experience, but this disadvantage is also compounded by many other factors outside of their control. Year after year, it is confirmed through statistic reports that rates of driving under the influence and drowsy driving go up at nighttime.
