Fatality Reported in Stockton Pedestrian Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton wrongful death lawyer. A pedestrian received fatal injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle in southeast Stockton on August 9, 2018. Shortly after 12:30 in the afternoon, a driver of a blue Chevrolet Malibu sedan was traveling eastbound along Section Avenue and attempted to turn onto Adelbert Avenue. While doing so, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and drifted into the oncoming traffic lanes. The Chevrolet then struck the front-end of a parked tractor-trailer moments before colliding with a man standing outside the large truck. The man suffered serious injuries and was transported to the San Joaquin County Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he was unable to recover from his injuries and passed away during hospitalization. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the man due to a pending notification of family members.
We would like to take this time to send our healing thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the victim who lost his life in this tragic accident.
Accident Investigation
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Chevrolet driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs following the pedestrian accident. The motorist was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter and DUI. The suspect may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Pedestrian Accidents in Stockton
According to a 2015 report by the California Office of Traffic Safety, approximately 2,271 victims suffered injuries and lost their lives in Stockton due to motor vehicle accidents. The city saw 159 injuries and fatalities of pedestrians that same year in question with 21 pedestrians over the age of 65 years and 29 pedestrians under the age of 15 years. Drunk driving was also attributable in 188 of these incidents and resulted in 352 DUI arrests overall.
Pedestrian Deaths
Pedestrian accidents are often caused by negligent driving habits such as distracted driving, DUI, and speeding. These accidents have the potential to result in traumatic injuries or even death in some extreme cases due to a pedestrian’s lack of physical protection from the impact of a motor vehicle. Most pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas and away from intersections after dark or during dusk when pedestrians are less visible on the road by oncoming drivers.
