Fed Ex Truck Hits CHP Officer
Fed Ex Truck Hits CHP Officer
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento truck injury lawyer. Two traffic collisions happened on Saturday, May 7, 2016 within about ten minutes of each other.
What Happened?
A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer suffered serious injuries early Saturday morning while working to clear a two-car collision along Highway 50. The collision was in the vicinity of the 15th Street off-ramp.
Shortly after CHP officers arrived at the 3:10 a.m. collision involving a hit-and-run motorist, a Federal Express tractor-trailer heading eastbound hit the officer. Initial reports said the collision against the officer was either directly or after first crashing into the officer’s patrol car, according to CHP.
The injured officer works out of the CHP’s South Sacramento office. Multiple lanes of Highway 50 had to be closed, as well as the 13th street on-ramps, so authorities could continue to investigate the two crashes.
Traffic backed up from the freeway caused heavy congestion on surface streets that parallel Highway 50.
Authorities are trying to find the unidentified driver of one of the two cars in the initial crash. That person fled the accident scene on foot. That collision had caused the closure of all lanes of traffic.
The second crash occurred about 10 minutes later as officers, with their patrol lights flashing, were in the process of clearing two vehicles off the highway and onto the shoulder.
What Caused the Fed Ex Driver to Hit the CHP Officer
Investigators indicated the driver of the Fed Ex Truck was driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. He was also said to be in possession of a narcotic when arrested.
The truck driver and his employer, Fed Ex, have been cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
