Fibromyalgia Following Car Accidents
Fibromyalgia Following Car Accidents — Most people can’t look away when they see a serious car accident on the side of the road. There is often a large traffic jam that frustrates people who are trying to travel from place to place. Unfortunately, car accidents have become so common that some people aren’t even surprised when they see them. Some statistics on car accidents published by the Department of Transportation (United States DOT) include:
- In 2016, there were close to 3,500 deaths that resulted from distracted driving, such as texting or talking on the phone while driving.
- More than 800 people were killed because someone was driving while fatigued.
- Close to 10,500 people were killed because someone was under the influence of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle.
- Almost the same number of people were killed because they were not wearing their seatbelt while driving.
- More than 10,000 people were killed because someone was speeding and an auto accident occurred.
These statistics demonstrate that people can be killed by a car accident at any time. Furthermore, even those that aren’t killed can develop serious complications as a result of their car accident. One of these is called fibromyalgia.
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a severe disease that impacts many people all over the world. This is a disease of the muscles that can lead to significant symptoms, which include:
- Severe muscle pain that can worsen during certain times of the day or with certain types of weather.
- Pain and tenderness can either be sharp or diffuse.
- This can lead to significant trouble sleeping.
- Many people also have hypersensitivity to cold, warmth, or touch.
- Occasionally, people also have gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and constipation.
These symptoms can have a severe impact on someone’s quality of life and might make it difficult for people to go to work or attend school. While some people develop this disease and never truly know why, in other cases, this can happen following a serious auto accident.
Fibromyalgia Following an Auto Accident
A recently published paper discussed how people can develop chronic pain following an auto accident. One of the many types of pain is that of fibromyalgia. Sometimes, this disease is triggered following a serious crash that causes the body to increase its inflammatory response. Even though the accident has concluded, the body’s response can become sidetracked and start attacking its own tissues. In some cases, this can mean damage to the body’s muscles and joints, which can lead to the development of fibromyalgia. While there are different treatment options available for people who struggle with this disease, the symptoms are often chronic in nature and people may have trouble controlling their pain. This could leave families wondering what they should do next.
