I’m Ed Smith, a Turlock car accident lawyer. A two-vehicle accident occurred west of Turlock on the morning of Sunday, October 22, 2017. Unfortunately, the accident claimed the life of one party.
We would like to extend our sincerest thoughts and condolences to the loved ones of the party that passed away in this devastating car accident.
What Happened?
An 18-year-old Hayward man was driving his 2017 Ford Mustang eastbound along West Main Street in the vicinity of South Carpenter Road at approximately 7:00 am. At the same time, a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was also in the eastbound lane and was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of West Main Street and South Carpenter Road. The Ford allegedly failed to stop and struck the rear-end of the Chevrolet. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to catch fire.
Passerby Rescues Accident Victims
A passing motorist pulled over to assist the injured parties of the car accident. The passerby was able to pull the driver and passenger out of the Ford before the vehicle engulfed in flames from the Chevrolet. Unfortunately, they were unable to rescue the driver of the Chevrolet due to the fire.
Nature of Injuries
The driver of the Ford suffered minor contusions and abrasions to his abdomen and arms. The passenger of the Ford, identified as a 19-year-old man of Turlock, suffered serious abdominal trauma. Sadly, the motorist of the Chevrolet was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased party has not yet been released by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office due to pending notification of next-of-kin.

What Caused the Accident?
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is in charge of the accident investigation. A cause has not yet been determined. A Traffic Collision Report generally takes seven to ten calendar days to be processed. A witness informed the CHP that the Ford Mustang passed his vehicle at a high rate of speed moments before the collision. The CHP examined the area and did not find any signs of braking from the Ford. The driver of the Ford was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence causing injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The motorist may face more charges as the investigation continues.
Drunk Driving Accidents Statistics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded in a 2015 report that approximately 10,265 victims passed away in accidents involving intoxicated motorists. This number accounted for approximately 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), about 290,000 injuries occur each year as a result of such incidents. Any person that has caused an automobile accident while driving under the influence of alcohol is automatically deemed negligent. Drivers charged with DUI in an accident are obligated to compensate for all losses caused to all affected parties. If you or a member in your family has suffered injuries caused by a drunk driver, it is vital to contact a seasoned Turlock car accident lawyer. An experienced attorney can assist an injured party with obtaining restitution to cover their medical costs, property damages and emotional harm.
