2020 Fill the Boot Fundraiser
Every year, regional firefighters volunteer their time to gather near Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, California, urging local residents to “fill the boot” for Burn Awareness Week. This year’s fundraiser runs through Sunday, February 9, 2020.
Travelers in the area are urged to bring caution as well as generosity, as the first responders walk in and around traffic near the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane. Just open your vehicle window if you would like to donate, and one of the friendly firefighters will offer a boot into which your donations can be dropped.
On Saturday, there will be a safety fair held in the parking lot at Sunrise Mall beginning at 11:00 a.m. and running until 2:00 p.m. According to Christopher Vestal, Metro Fire Captain, the safety event will include a demonstration of automobile extrication by some of the firefighters.
History of the Fundraiser
Last year’s Fill the Boot fundraiser reported more than $170,000 in donations. Across the state, similar events collected over $500,000 in 2019 for the Firefighters Burn Institute, which was founded in 1973 in Sacramento after the Farrell’s ice cream parlor crash. The tragic accident was devastating to so many Sacramento families when 22 people were killed and many others were left with burn injuries.
The Fill the Boot donations go toward funding for burn survivor recovery programs, such as the Firefighters Kids Camp and Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp.

2020 Fundraising Goal
The Firefighters Burn Institute has stated a 2020 fundraising goal of $500,000.00 to support regional burn centers and burn programs. With the commitments made thus far by state fire agencies, as well as donations from generous Citrus Heights/Sacramento residents, they are confident they can reach their goal!
