Firefighters Light Fires in South Vacaville for Training Exercise
Several local government agencies reported that they would be conducting prescribed burns in south Vacaville as part of a week-long wildfire response training program. The Vacaville Fire Department (VFD) indicated that the exercises would begin on Monday, June 15, 2020, and continue throughout the week until Saturday. VFD indicated that the training exercises would be conducted on state-owned property behind the prison complex off Foxboro road.
The Program
The six-day long training program was scheduled to include firefighters from multiple local and state-wide agencies, including VFD, the Vacaville Fire Protection District, CMF Fire, and the California Department of Forestry. Courses offered during the program reportedly offer participants the opportunity to become certified in fighting wildland fires.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, incarcerated firefighters would be assisting with the controlled burns. Incarcerated individuals participating in the exercises have reportedly recently completed a set of basic courses that are required to work as wildland firefighters by state law.
The Location
The location of the burns was selected in order to lessen the risk of a serious fire in a particularly impacted area. The area is adjacent to thousands of homes as well as two state prison facilities with a combined population of over 5,000 people. Not only will conducting burns in the area help train firefighters, but officials said that it would reduce the risk of a serious fire at the location during the summer. VFD indicated that the controlled burns were expected to reduce fire risk in the area by around 95 percent.
The Nelson Fire in South Vacaville
This effort is partly in response to the Nelson Fire, which took place in the same general area two years ago, starting on August 10, 2018. The fire prompted thousands of evacuations in both Vacaville and Fairfield, as well as the emergency relocation of animals at the Solano County SPCA. Ultimately, the fire destroyed one home and damaged two more structures, burning nearly 3.4 square miles.
Wildfire Damages
Wildfires in California have been extremely destructive in recent years, causing billions of dollars in damage and taking the lives of hundreds of people. Families can have their lives severely impacted by wildfires and often struggle to recover after losing their homes or suffering serious burn injuries.
If you have suffered damages as the result of a wildfire, it’s important to reach out to an attorney who can help you recover compensation from parties responsible for the fire. While it can take a long time for investigators to determine what caused a wildfire, you should call a Vacaville personal injury lawyer as soon as you are able to so that you can be assured your family will obtain the payments you need to pay for medical expenses, damaged property, and other losses.
