Follow-up on Livestreamed Fatal Car Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton Personal Injury Lawyer. Earlier this month, I reported on a fatal vehicle accident that occured near Los Banos in Merced County that took place on July 21, 2017. This car accident caused one fatality. Since the time of my prior report, the driver of the accident has released public statements on her involvement in the tragedy that killed her little sister and injured another teenage girl.
KSEE-TV Interview
Recently, 18-year old Obdulia Sanchez, a Stockton resident that was driving during the time of the crash, spoke out in defense of livestreaming the auto accident in her interview with KSEE-TV. To many she appeared to be minimizing the severity of filming while driving. In her interview she admitted that this was not her first time livestreaming, saying, “Everybody does it. We do it all the time – all the time. It’s like a reflex.”
Is Livestreaming Normal These Days?
Sanchez’s statement indicated that livestreaming while driving was fairly normal for people of her age: “Why not? People take videos of them in cars like all the time. And I’m only 18 – we’re still young.” During the interview, she revealed that she had not had the chance to watch the livestream video she made until a few days ago. After looking back at the video, she said “I didn’t even know I looked like a monster – like I look like a horrible freaking monster. That was not my intention at all.”
Sanchez recalled the moments leading up to the crash: “We were perfectly freaking fine. Then next thing I know, we started going left. We started going left, then I started to stop the car. Then we flipped over.” Sanchez was the only person involved in the crash that was not ejected from the car. She remembers the horror of discovering her sister and her friend, saying “Then – I looked in the backseat – and there’s nobody in the backseat, and that’s when I started freaking out.”
Sanchez, who has been charged with six different felonies, including drunk driving and gross vehicular manslaughter, has posted $300,000 bail. Sanchez had a 0.08 blood alcohol content level during the accident. She has pleaded not guilty too all charges made against her.
She also spoke highly of her now deceased little sister, as she said that her little sister was practically like her twin. Losing a sister that was also a best friend, Sanchez admitted that she is “really sad that she’s gone.”
When Sanchez’s KSEE-TV interviewer asked Sanchez how she felt about the negative public backlash caused by her livestream video, she acknowledged the daily death threats she has been receiving. She didn’t seem to understand the reason for the threats: ” “You’re only going to make my parents suffer more. The people who are mad at me are not helping us, my family doesn’t need to lose a second daughter.”
