Fort Bragg Rollover Accident Results in Serious Injury
I’m Ed Smith, a Fort Bragg car accident lawyer. A rollover accident in Fort Bragg on April 25 resulted in serious injury to one person. My thoughts are with the injured person and family during this time of tragedy.
What Happened
The incident occurred about 1:41 in the afternoon in the area where Shoreline Highway intersects with Little Valley Road, north of the city. A vehicle turned over and blocked traffic in both directions of the roadway. When law enforcement officers arrived at the accident site, they discovered a severely injured person attempting to exit the vehicle. Paramedics arrived to take care of the injured victim, and no further information is available as to the condition or identity of the crash victim or the name of the hospital where he or she was transported. Officials from the California Highway Patrol are conducting an investigation to find the cause of the accident. It is unknown if there were other vehicles involved.
Rollover Accidents: Types of Vehicles
Rollover accidents result in many deaths nationwide. There are certain parameters associated with such accidents. One of these is the type of vehicle involved. Typically, tall, narrow vehicles are predisposed to rollovers due to their unique center of gravity. SUVs, vans and certain pickups are some examples.
Causes of Rollover Accidents
Two of the main reasons behind rollovers aside from vehicular type are speeding and impaired driving. Roadways with a higher speed limit are 75 percent more likely to be the site of a rollover accident. In addition, 40 percent of rollover crashes are caused by speeding overall.
Impaired driving is more likely to end in a rollover crash. The inability to respond appropriately and the lack of coordination when impaired sets up the baseline for this type of accident.
Driving while fatigued can also lead to rollover accidents. Falling asleep at the wheel is considered one of the main reasons corrective actions are not taken in such accidents.
Fatalities in Rollover Crashes
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 75 percent of those who died in a rollover crash failed to use seat belts or other restraints. In fact, nearly 66 percent were ejected from the vehicle.
Rollover accidents are responsible for about 20 percent of all fatal accidents and are statistically most likely to end in a fatality. While the incidence of rollovers in passenger cars is decreasing, the incidence in trucks, SUVs and vans is increasing, with SUV rollovers nearly doubling since 1991.
Rollovers are most often single-vehicle accidents. In this group, avoidance techniques are not used 40 percent of the time. In multi-vehicle rollover accidents, that number jumped to nearly 60 percent.
