Four Killed During Auto Accident on Carquinez Bridge
On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, four people tragically lost their lives during an auto accident on Carquinez Bridge. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has identified all four of the decedents as 22-year-old Cecilia “CeeCee” Ayala of Hayward, 21-year-old Christopher “Chris” Mata of Rodeo, 19-year-old Kyle Erickson of Pittsburg and 19-year-old Perla Navarro of Richmond. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the incident involved one vehicle and is still being investigated. Separate GoFundMe pages have been created for Ms. Nevarro, Mr. Mata, and Ms. Ayala to help their families cover final resting expenses.
Crash Details
Multiple witnesses contacted CHP at around 8:40 p.m. in order to report a vehicle careened off of the Carquinez Bridge. CHP has since reported that the vehicle was a 2006 white Infiniti SUV that was traveling eastbound on Highway Interstate 80 and had just passed the exit for Pomona Street in Crockett before it veered right and crashed into a guard rail before falling off the bridge. The SUV fell hundreds of feet before landing on a train below just outside of the C&H sugar factory. CHP indicated that the train was not moving at the time of the accident.
Response
When emergency responders arrived at the accident site, traffic was stopped at the curve on I-80 near the accident, where many drivers had pulled over to the highway shoulder. Responders discovered that all four of the vehicle occupants suffered critical injuries during the incident and passed away on-scene. Officers indicated that all four individuals had been wearing seat-belts at the time of the crash.
Investigation
I-80 was partially closed off to traffic while officials responded to the accident and conducted preliminary collision scene investigations. While the highway was fully re-opened by 10:30 p.m., emergency staff remained at the scene until well past midnight.
CHP has indicated that they are still investigating what could have been the cause of this crash. Anybody with information about the incident that could help officers with their investigation has been asked to get in touch with Solano CHP at (707) 428-2100.
Contacting a Vallejo Personal Injury & Wrongful Death Attorney
Investigating fatal collisions can be a very difficult job for police, especially if no parties involved in the accident are able to tell investigators what took place. In these cases, it’s possible that investigating officials won’t be able to uncover evidence that could be a key part of a wrongful death case.
To make sure that your family can obtain the compensation you deserve from at-fault parties, it is crucial to have help from a Vallejo personal injury lawyer who has experience privately investigating fatal accidents. A good attorney will be able to find out if any negligence was involved in the collision and help you hold at-fault parties responsible.
