A rollover accident in Fresno left a family of three injured on March 2, 2019. The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 in the afternoon along the Shaw Avenue on-ramp of Highway 41. The driver of a Chevrolet Suburban SUV reportedly overcorrected while getting onto the freeway. This caused the vehicle to lose control and overturned several times, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Three parties, identified as two adults and a minor, were inside the vehicle and suffered injuries described as minor. They were all taken to a local hospital as a safety precaution. An update regarding their conditions has not yet been released by authorities.
How Rollover Accidents Happen
Rollover accidents are divided into two categories, untripped rollovers and tripped rollovers. Untripped rollovers can occur due to a loss of traction between the road and the vehicle’s tires. This can occur as a result of bald or defective tires, hydroplaning, overcorrecting, or debris on the roadway. Conversely, tripped rollovers happen when an external force collides with the car and causes it to overturn. Striking a street curb or crashing into another vehicle is the common cause of tripped rollovers.
Common Injuries in a Rollover Accident
Rollover collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents. This is due to the vehicle landing on its roof in the crash, increasing the chances of the structure collapsing inward. Occupants within the vehicle may be propelled against the doors and the crushed roof. In other cases, they may be ejected out of the car. In any of these instances, serious injuries often result. These may include internal trauma, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, dental damage, and more.
Roof Crush Resistance in a Rollover Accident
The survival rate in a rollover accident depends on the strength of the car’s roof. Federal standards require that the roof must be able to support at least 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight. The design of some cars sometimes fails to meet this standard. Issues with structural support and strength are most frequently seen. When this happens, an auto manufacturer may be held financially responsible for a rollover accident either for improperly functioning safety equipment or defective design. Since auto products liability cases are often difficult to pursue, it is essential to discuss your options with an experienced personal injury attorney. How a Fresno Personal Injury Lawyer Can Help
Rollover accidents can result in traumatic injuries for those involved. Proving liability in such cases can be challenging. This is especially true if defective vehicle design was involved. An experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer can help by investigating the design of the vehicle to determine whether it has adhered to federal standards regarding prevention of crushed roofs. By doing so, the attorney can prepare a strong case for compensation of damages incurred.
